The Nativity comes to life through the village streets and Castello Teofilatto, lit only by fires, torches, and lanterns.
Just a few kilometers from Fiuggi, within the Lago di Canterno Nature Reserve, the small village of Torre Cajetani clusters around the imposing Teofilatto Castle in the province of Frosinone. Every winter, between late December and Epiphany, its stone streets become the stage for one of the most evocative living nativity scenes in the Lazio region: the Torre Cajetani Living Nativity. This re-enactment of the Nativity involves the entire community and marks its 22nd anniversary in the 2025-2026 season.
The performance unfolds along a route starting at Porta Garibaldi in the historic center, climbing to the highest point of the village where the Teofilatto Castle (also known as Castello Caetani) stands. Along the way, the village streets are lit exclusively by fires and torches—a scenic choice that recreates the atmosphere of a village from two millennia ago, making the walk particularly enchanting after sunset. The highlight is the arrival at the Nativity Hut, set up inside the medieval castle and accompanied by shepherds.
The strength of the Torre Cajetani nativity lies in its meticulous reproduction of ancient arts and crafts. Among the scenes animating the village, visitors encounter Roman soldiers conducting a census, artisans at work in their shops, market bartering, as well as carpenters, blacksmiths, wool-workers, and farmers. The scene also features Herod's palace, shepherds with live animals, and, in past editions, the participation of historical re-enactment groups like the Legio Alatrensis from Alatri. The settings are decorated with traditional materials and rural artifacts, ensuring a faithful reconstruction free from modern artifice.
The route includes brief stops in the village cellars, where visitors can sample traditional Ciociarian dishes and products:
This gastronomic element, offered along the path, turns the visit into a complete experience that blends spirituality, history, and local heritage.
The castle dominating the scene is no mere backdrop: the Teofilatto Castle, linked to the Caetani family, was the residence of Pope Boniface VIII, one of the most powerful figures of the Middle Ages. Ending the living nativity here weaves the Gospel narrative with the authentic history of the village, which is one of the reasons the event attracts visitors from across Ciociaria and the rest of Lazio every year.
The Living Nativity is organized by the Pro Loco of Torre Cajetani with the support of the Tourism Department of the Lazio Region and the patronage of the Torre Cajetani Municipal Administration. Admission is free, confirming the popular spirit of the event, which was born as a community celebration and has grown, edition after edition, into one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the province of Frosinone.
For the 2025-2026 season, the twenty-second in its history, the Torre Cajetani Living Nativity offered two performances: the first on Sunday, December 28, 2025, and the repeat on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 (Epiphany), both from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The event was organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Lazio Region Tourism Department and the Municipal Administration.
The Nativity performance was set up between the Teofilatto Castle—the Caetani fortress that hosted Pope Boniface VIII—and the adjacent historic center streets, following the traditional route that climbs from Porta Garibaldi toward the upper part of the village. The village streets were illuminated only by fires and torches to make the re-enactment even more evocative.
Along the way, visitors encountered Roman soldiers from the census, artisans in their workshops, the market with goods bartering, carpenters, blacksmiths, wool-workers, and farmers, as well as Herod's palace and shepherds with their animals. Stops in the cellars allowed visitors to enjoy warm ricotta, mulled wine, honey, bruschetta, and pasta e fagioli, before arriving at the Nativity Hut set up in the medieval castle. Admission was free.
Along the route: census with Roman soldiers, workshops of carpenters, blacksmiths, wool-workers, and farmers, market with goods bartering, Herod's palace, shepherds with live animals, and tasting stops in the cellars (warm ricotta, mulled wine, honey, bruschetta, pasta e fagioli).
