The ancient fire ritual that burns away winter in the tuff-stone village of Pitigliano
The Torciata di San Giuseppe is one of the most fascinating and ancient traditions in the Tuscan Maremma. It takes place in Pitigliano, a spectacular village perched on a tuff cliff in the Province of Grosseto, every March 19th, to mark the feast day of Saint Joseph. Beneath its Christian veneer, however, the ritual preserves a distinctly pagan soul: its origins likely date back to the Etruscan era, when the transition from winter to spring was celebrated with large propitiatory bonfires near the equinox.
In pre-Christian times, fire represented purification and a wish for a fertile and prosperous year. In the Middle Ages, the ceremony of the buried seed, a symbol of life, was Christianized and aligned with the feast of Saint Joseph, while maintaining its original meaning of seasonal rebirth.
The absolute protagonists are the torciatori, local men dressed in traditional white robes and hoods, who carry enormous bundles of burning reeds. The procession winds through the tuff-stone village and reaches the historic center, creating an atmosphere charged with mystery and charm among the ancient stones of what is known as the 'Little Jerusalem'.
The heart of the festival is the lighting of the invernacciu, a giant puppet about eight meters tall, made by weaving reeds with a head of hay. When the torciatori set it on fire in Piazza Garibaldi, the flames quickly devour it, turning it into ash: this is the symbolic end of winter. As the bonfire burns, the hooded men dance in a circle around the fire in an ancient propitiatory dance to welcome the new season.
The tradition concludes the following morning, when the local women gather the ashes and scatter them in the fields to bring luck and fertility to the year's harvest.
In recent years, the Torciata has become an occasion for a rich program of events spread throughout the historic center of Pitigliano: the Corteo del Villano (Villager's Procession) with music and dancing, the minitorciata for children, tastings of Bianco di Pitigliano wine, guided tours of the village and the evocative Etruscan Vie Cave (sunken roads), the Vie Cave trail run, and food stalls featuring typical Maremma products. Organized by the Promo.fi.ter Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Pitigliano, the Torciata di San Giuseppe attracts visitors from all over Tuscany and beyond every year.
In 2026, the Torciata di San Giuseppe returned to ignite the spring in Pitigliano, with a program spread over several days and the highly anticipated main evening on March 19th. The event was promoted by the Promo.fi.ter Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Pitigliano.
Pitigliano is located in the Tuscan Maremma, in the Province of Grosseto, near the border with Lazio. By car, it can be reached via the SS74 Maremmana; the nearest useful train stations are Albinia or Orvieto, with onward travel by bus or car. It is advisable to arrive early to find parking near the historic center.
The main event takes place every year on March 19th, in the evening, with side events in the preceding days.
The event takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free to attend. For information: +39 334 2541244 / +39 333 1081023.
