Wine, music, and stars on the Night of San Lorenzo in the tuff-stone village
Calici di Stelle in Pitigliano is one of the most evocative food and wine events of the Maremma summer. Part of the national Calici di Stelle calendar, promoted by the Wine Tourism Movement and the Città del Vino association, the event takes place during the Night of San Lorenzo, when the sky lights up with the Perseid meteor shower. The setting is the unique backdrop of Pitigliano, the "city of tuff" perched on a rocky spur in the municipality of Pitigliano, in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.
On the main evening, the historic center comes alive with tasting stalls set up along the most scenic streets and squares: Piazza della Repubblica, Via Roma, Via Zuccarelli, and the characteristic village alleys. With a glass and pouch purchased at the entrance, participants wander freely between stations, sampling wines from local wineries—most notably the famous Bianco di Pitigliano—paired with traditional dishes offered by local restaurateurs. Numerous live music stations scattered throughout the town accompany the food and wine journey, creating a festive atmosphere that lasts until late at night.
The event is preceded by a refined preview hosted at the "Alberto Manzi" Open-Air Archaeological Museum (Strada del Pantano), where culture and wine meet: a guided tour of the "City of the Living," a guided tasting of Fattoria La Maliosa wines, and a toast accompanied by a live concert. An elegant prelude to the grand evening in the historic center.
Known as the "Little Jerusalem" due to the historic presence of the Jewish community, Pitigliano is one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Its houses seem to emerge from the very tuff rock they rest upon, and the ancient cellars carved into the subsoil tell of a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Experiencing Calici di Stelle means discovering this extraordinary Tuscany heritage with a glass in hand, amidst history, landscape, and conviviality.
For 2026, Calici di Stelle returns to Pitigliano during the Night of San Lorenzo, with the usual two-part format. The grand tasting evening in the historic center is scheduled for Sunday, August 10, starting at 9 PM, with an itinerary through the squares and alleys of the tuff-stone village: with glass and pouch in hand, visitors stroll between stations sampling wines from local wineries, accompanied by dishes from local restaurateurs and numerous live music spots.
The event is preceded on Saturday, August 9, at 9 PM, by the preview at the "Alberto Manzi" Open-Air Archaeological Museum (Strada del Pantano): guided tour, tasting of Fattoria La Maliosa wines, and a toast with a live concert.
Admission to the tasting evening is by purchasing the glass kit. Advance tickets are available at the Pro Loco office at Via Roma 11 in the days leading up to the event at a reduced price compared to the night of the event.
