A Renaissance re-enactment and the challenge between the four districts of Pitigliano
Every year, in mid-August, Pitigliano โ the famous "Little Jerusalem" perched on tuff rock in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma โ turns back the clock to the golden age of the Orsini County. The County Festival is a Renaissance historical re-enactment that transforms the historic center into a true 16th-century court for three days, with the Orsini Palace serving as a monumental backdrop.
The beating heart of the festival is the Palio of the Districts, a challenge between the four historic districts of the village, each with its own colors and patron saint:
Over the course of the three evenings, the districts compete in tests of skill and speed: starting with the draw and assignment of runners on the first night, moving to the semi-finals, and finally the highly anticipated finals on the last evening, when the Palio is awarded and the winning district is declared. This is the moment when local rivalry, experienced with passion by young and old alike, reaches its peak.
The festival celebrates the era of Count Niccolรฒ III Orsini and weaves local history with that of the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, creator of important works in Pitigliano. Jesters, acrobats, jugglers, dancers, musicians, soldiers, archers, drummers, and costumed figures bring the village streets to life in a succession of performances that recreate the atmosphere of a Renaissance court.
The convivial dimension is not forgotten: the Hosteria del Viandante offers sandwiches, wine, beer, traditional desserts, and the essential hippocras, while the Count's Mess is a dinner-show set up in the square. All around, the County Market unfolds, with stalls featuring crafts, art, and ancient trades that complete the immersion into the past.
Organized by the Polisportiva San Rocco in collaboration with the Municipality of Pitigliano and numerous local entities, the County Festival is much more than a simple re-enactment: it is an identity-defining event that involves the entire community and, against the unique backdrop of the village carved into the tuff, offers visitors one of the most authentic experiences in southern Tuscany.
The dates for the 2026 edition are set from August 17 to 19, according to the official Pitigliano calendar. Once again this year, the tuff-stone village in the Maremma region of Grosseto will host three evenings of Renaissance re-enactment with the customary Palio of the Districts challenge between Capisotto, Fratta, Borgonovo, and Capisopra.
The detailed program (times for the Palio trials, historical processions, performances, taverns, and the County Market) will be made public by the Polisportiva San Rocco in the weeks preceding the event. For updates, it is recommended to check the organizers' official channels.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the festival is spread over three evenings: the first dedicated to the draw and assignment of the Palio runners, the second to the semi-finals, and the third to the long-awaited finals of the Palio of the Districts, accompanied each evening by historical processions, performances by jesters, flag-wavers, and soldiers, the Hosteria del Viandante, and the County Market.
Times and performance details will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Pitigliano is located in the far south of Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto. By car, it can be reached via the SS74 Maremmana; from Rome or Florence, it is best to exit the A1 motorway and continue towards the Tuff Area. The nearest train station is Albinia, which is then connected by bus.
The festival generally takes place in mid-to-late August over three days (from Thursday to Saturday), with evening entertainment from approximately 6:00 PM until late at night.
Access to the village and the entertainment is free. The themed dinners, such as the Count's Mess, and food and drinks at the taverns are paid. For information: Polisportiva San Rocco, tel. +39 329 4378673.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uphill tuff-stone alleys. Arrive early to find parking near the center and to secure a good spot during the Palio finals.
