The traveling Carnival festivities in the hamlets of Val di Non
The Ton Hamlet Carnival is one of the most vibrant expressions of popular traditions in the Val di Non, in the municipality of Ton (Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige). Rather than a single large parade, it is a series of traveling festivals that, throughout the weeks of Carnival, visit the municipality's hamlets one after another: Vigo di Ton (the municipal seat), Bastianelli, and Toss are the villages that traditionally enliven the calendar, each with its own committee and dedicated day.
The heart of every event is village conviviality: masks and costumes for adults and children, entertainment and face painting, games and raffles, and above all, the food. There is never a shortage of maccheronata (pasta parties) or community lunches featuring potato gnocchi with tomato sauce, accompanied by the typical Trentino Carnival sweets, grostoli (classic fried pastries). The hamlet committees—3P Toss, 3P Vigo, and the Bastianelli Committee—together with the local Alpini Group and the SAT, sustain this network of festivities through voluntary work that is itself part of the tradition.
A defining element of the Ton Carnival is the theatrical performance by the Filodrammatica di Ton, which stages evening shows in Vigo di Ton during the Carnival season. The amateur company, deeply rooted in the community, offers comedies and variety shows in both dialect and standard language, attracting audiences from across the area and adding an indoor cultural dimension to the outdoor festivities.
The setting is one of the most evocative territories in Trentino: Ton is famous for Castel Thun, the majestic residence of the Thun counts that overlooks the hamlet of Vigo di Ton and is now part of the Castello del Buonconsiglio circuit. Experiencing Carnival in these hamlets means immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the Val di Non villages, far from large mass events, where the celebration remains a community affair, passed down from generation to generation.
The official 2026 events calendar of the Municipality of Ton confirmed the traveling sequence of Carnival festivities in the hamlets of Val di Non:
Accompanying the festivities, the Filodrammatica di Ton offered theatrical evenings in Vigo di Ton, now a fixed moment of the Ton Carnival. As per tradition, there was no shortage of masks, entertainment for children, pasta parties, and typical Trentino Carnival sweets.
Ton is located in Val di Non, in the Province of Trento. By car, it can be reached via the SS43 Val di Non road, taking the exit toward Vigo di Ton; the reference train station is the Trento-Malè (Trento-Malè-Mezzana Railway) in the nearby valley towns, with connections by bus or car.
The hamlet festivals have free admission; pasta parties and community lunches generally require a contribution per plate or a fixed-price menu, just as the Filodrammatica theater show is traditionally free or by donation.
As these are events organized by local committees, it is advisable to check the updated dates and times on the events calendar published by the Municipality of Ton and the Pro Loco.
