Grilled Maremmana beef in the village of Tolfa, hosted by Rione Cappuccini
The Tolfetana Steak Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in the Municipality of Tolfa, a hilltop village in the Tolfa Mountains in the province of Rome, Northern Lazio. For two evenings in July, Piazzale Europa transforms into a large open-air dining area where the absolute star is the steak: tender, succulent, and expertly grilled to bring out its authentic flavor. The event is now an institution in the Lazio festival scene, attracting thousands of food lovers, tourists, and families every year.
The heart of the festival is the meat from Maremmana cattle, a local culinary excellence. These long-horned cattle, raised in the wild in the pastures of the Tolfa Mountains, have been the symbol of the agricultural and pastoral identity of this land of 'butteri' (cowboys) for centuries. The steaks, carefully selected, are strictly grilled right before the visitors' eyes: a ritual that smells of embers and tradition.
The festival is organized with passion and dedication by the Rione Cappuccini, one of the oldest districts in the town and a long-time leader in Tolfa's social life. The district's volunteers handle every aspect of the event, from the grills to table service, making the festival a benchmark for promoting the area and its flavors. It is this neighborhood spirit, typical of Lazio villages, that gives the festival its genuine and communal character.
Alongside the steak, the food stands offer other local dishes prepared according to Tolfetana tradition, accompanied by local wines and beverages. There is also a menu designed for children, confirming the family-friendly nature of the festival. All this takes place in a lively and festive atmosphere, with live music, shows, and entertainment for all ages; in recent editions, the Saturday evening continues with a Night Party featuring a DJ set and cocktail bar.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Tolfa, a medieval village dominated by the ruins of the Rocca dei Frangipane. It is famous for its leather craftsmanshipโthe 'catana' bag was born hereโand for the pristine landscape of the Tolfa Mountains, among the most evocative in Lazio. Less than an hour from Rome and a few kilometers from Civitavecchia, the town combines nature, mining history, and a deep-rooted gastronomic culture that this festival showcases at its best.
In 2026, the Tolfetana Steak Festival returned to Piazzale Europa on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, with stands opening at 8:00 PM. The Rione Cappuccini offered their famous Maremmana beef steaks, carefully selected and strictly grilled, alongside other traditional Tolfetana dishes, local wines, and a dedicated children's menu.
The two evenings were accompanied by live music, shows, and entertainment for all ages. A new feature for the 2026 edition, the Saturday night Night Party with a DJ set and cocktail bar extended the festivities late into the night, confirming the festival as one of the highlights of the Tolfa summer.
Tolfa can be reached by car from Rome via the Via Aurelia or the SS675/Via Braccianese in about an hour, and from Civitavecchia in about 30 minutes along the SP3bis. Piazzale Europa is located at the entrance to the town. By train, the nearest station is Civitavecchia, with regional bus connections available.
Access to the festival area is free; food and drinks are purchased at the stands. For information and table reservations: +39 320 1798489 or the official social media pages of Rione Cappuccini.
