About Terreni Fertili

Terreni Fertili Festival is the national showcase dedicated to contemporary performing arts, promoted by the Teatro Sociale of Gualtieri, in the Bassa Reggiana region. Recognized by the Ministry of Culture, it spans the Emilia summer with theatre, dance, music, and site-specific performances on the historic stage, in courtyards, villas, and landscapes along the Po River. A showcase for the emerging scene that brings Italian and international artists, national premieres, and special projects like Direction Under 30 and the GULP! section for families to the small town of Gualtieri each year.

A festival that makes the Bassa Reggiana bloom

Terreni Fertili Festival is the showcase for contemporary performing arts at the Teatro Sociale of Gualtieri, in the heart of the Bassa Reggiana region, in Emilia-Romagna. Founded to provide a space for new developments in the performing scene and to promote emerging artists, the festival is now a nationally significant event, recognized by the Ministry of Culture. For months, it transforms the Municipality of Gualtieri, in the province of Reggio Emilia, into a crossroads of theatre, dance, music, and performance.

An event spread along the Po

The festival is not limited to the magnificent 19th-century stage of the Teatro Sociale: performances multiply in courtyards, villas, open spaces, architectural sites, and floodplain landscapes along the Po River. This widespread dimension is one of the most recognizable features of the showcase, capable of intertwining live performance with the rural and riverine identity of the Po Valley and the iconic Piazza Bentivoglio, one of the largest in Italy.

Sections and pathways

The program is divided into several complementary sections:

  • GULP! — the strand dedicated to children, young people, and families, with storytelling, theatre, and adaptations of mythological repertoire;
  • Direction Under 30 — the festival within the festival reserved for companies and artists under 30, a true forge of new stage languages;
  • Argini Festival — the collaboration that follows the course of the Po through several municipalities in the Bassa region, with a weekend program of theatre and landscape.

Theatre, dance, music, and new languages

The programming mixes European contemporary theatre, dance, live music scores for cinema, international music, and site-specific performances, with national premieres and previews. Over the years, the festival has hosted renowned names from the Italian and foreign scene, building a multidisciplinary offering that looks at the most experimental practices without neglecting dialogue with the public and the local community.

A cultural outpost for the territory

Supported through the Art Bonus scheme and rooted in the daily work of the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri association, Terreni Fertili represents a precious cultural outpost for a small town in the Reggio Emilia province. Audience development, especially for young people, and support for contemporary creation are at the heart of its mission, making it one of the most anticipated events of the Emilia-Romagna performing arts summer.

Terreni Fertili — edition 2026

The 12th edition of Terreni Fertili Festival is titled 'Despite Everything' and is the largest ever: over three months of programming, from May 2 to August 1, 2026, between the Teatro Sociale of Gualtieri, courtyards, villas, and landscapes along the Po River. The program includes contemporary theatre, dance, music, site-specific performances, national premieres, and shows for all ages, featuring Italian and international artists.

12th Edition: 'Despite Everything'

For 2026, Terreni Fertili Festival chooses the title 'Despite Everything' and presents the largest edition in its history: over three months of shows, from May 2 to August 1, spread across the stage of the Teatro Sociale of Gualtieri, courtyards, villas, open spaces, and floodplain landscapes of the Po River, in the province of Reggio Emilia.
