The grand theatrical season at the Teatro Garibaldi in Modica
The Teatro Garibaldi Prose Season is the premier theatrical event in the city of Modica, located in the province of Ragusa in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Promoted by the Fondazione Teatro Garibaldi, the season runs throughout the winter months, from October to May, featuring ten double-bill performances that offer subscribers the flexibility to choose their preferred evening.
Teatro Garibaldi stands along Corso Umberto I in the historic centre of Modica, a city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its extraordinary Baroque architecture. Built in the early 19th century and inaugurated in 1857 with Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, the theatre owes its current appearance to renovations carried out between 1852 and 1857 by architect Salvatore Toscano. The neoclassical facade, topped by a balustrade and a clock crowned by the eagle—the symbol of the County of Modica—encloses an Italian-style auditorium of rare elegance, recently restored with new seating, curtains, and furnishings that respect the original design.
The programme alternates between great classics of theatrical literature, popular comedy, and new contemporary drama. The Garibaldi stage hosts some of the most beloved performers on the Italian scene, accompanied by prestigious directors. Audiences can enjoy timeless authors such as Eduardo De Filippo, Molière, Luigi Pirandello, and Herman Melville, alongside more recent, crowd-pleasing titles.
In addition to the prose season, the Fondazione Teatro Garibaldi also offers a musical season, produced in collaboration with the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, ranging from opera and symphonic works to jazz and piano recitals. The theatre thus confirms itself as an authentic cultural engine for Modica and the entire south-eastern Sicily region.
The programme is designed primarily for subscribers, with packages covering the entire season, though tickets for individual performances are always available. Sales begin in the autumn, with priority booking reserved for long-term subscribers before opening to new subscriptions and individual ticket sales.
The 2025/2026 season at Teatro Garibaldi in Modica opened on October 18-19, 2025, with Extra moenia by Emma Dante and continued until May with ten double-bill titles. The programme brought together great performers of the Italian stage in a journey through classics and new drama.
Among the most anticipated events: Il vedovo with Massimo Ghini and Galatea Ranzi (December 2-3), Perfetti sconosciuti by Paolo Genovese (December 16-17), Ditegli sempre di sì by Eduardo De Filippo (January 23-24), L'Avaro by Molière with Enrico Guarneri (February 7-8), Il Piacere dell'onestà by Pirandello with Pippo Pattavina (March 7-8), Moby Dick with Moni Ovadia (March 14-15), Gente di facili costumi with Flavio Insinna (May 12-13), and La ricerca della felicità by and with Stefano Massini (May 23-24).
