Allegorical floats and masked groups in the heart of Salento

The Taurisano Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in the town of Taurisano, located in the lower Salento area of the province of Lecce, in Apulia. As noted by the municipal administration, the festival traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of Carnival and Shrove Tuesday, featuring a grand parade of allegorical floats, masked groups, dancing, and plenty of entertainment that brings the town's streets and squares to life.
The heart of the event lies in the papier-mâché allegorical floats, often crafted from recycled materials and inspired by satirical, nostalgic, or current themes. Surrounding the floats are the masked groups, the true stars of the festival: choreography, meticulously detailed costumes, and music transform the parade into a traveling spectacle that engages the public along the entire route.
The Taurisano Carnival is, above all, a community festival: numerous families, associations, and local volunteers participate in the preparation process, spending weeks building floats and organizing the groups. Among the most well-known participants in recent years is the Geni…Tori Laboriosi group, founded in 2018 specifically for the Taurisano Carnival, which brings together over two hundred participants from more than one hundred families.
The festival is part of the rich tradition of the Salento Carnival, which has its roots in ancient popular celebrations linked to the cycles of nature and the anticipation of spring. In the Lecce area, alongside the major parades in Gallipoli, Corsano, and Aradeo, the Taurisano Carnival represents an authentic and deeply felt piece of this tradition, drawing families and curious visitors from neighboring towns.
A free, open-air event that unites young and old in the spirit of tradition, creativity, and Carnival joy.
Taurisano is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce.
