About TassonArt

TassonArt is a widespread contemporary art exhibition that transforms the tiny village of Tassonarla—a hamlet in the municipality of Tresana, Lunigiana—into an open-air gallery every summer. Amidst the stone alleys, houses, and courtyards of a village with just seventy inhabitants, works by Italian and international artists engage in a dialogue with the rural architecture and landscape of the Province of Massa-Carrara. It is a territorial regeneration project that weaves together art, community, and the identity of inland Tuscany, enriched by meetings, performances, concerts, and tastings of local products.

Contemporary art in the heart of Lunigiana

TassonArt is a widespread contemporary art exhibition held in the village of Tassonarla, a hamlet of the municipality of Tresana, in the Lunigiana region of the Province of Massa-Carrara, Tuscany. For a few days each summer, a village of just seventy inhabitants is transformed into an open-air museum: installations, sculptures, paintings, and site-specific works inhabit the alleys, small squares, courtyards, and houses of the village, creating an intense dialogue between contemporary art and rural architecture.

A territorial regeneration project

Born as an initiative to enhance inland areas, TassonArt is much more than a simple exhibition: it is a cultural regeneration experiment that restores life and visibility to a village in the Tuscan hinterland. The event is supported by the Tuscany Region, the Union of Lunigiana Municipalities, and the Municipality of Tresana, and is part of a broader effort to promote small villages as places of identity and creativity.

The 2026 edition: «Earth. Soul and Matter»

The fifth edition, scheduled from July 31 to August 2, 2026, with the exhibition remaining on display throughout the month of August, revolves around the theme «Earth. Soul and Matter». The theme invites reflection on the earth in its multiple dimensions, connecting the raw material of the landscape to the soul of local communities. Artists from Europe, South America, Asia, and Italy are expected, selected in part through an open call for artists under 40.

Three days of meetings, performances, and culture

In addition to the exhibition, the central days offer a rich and multidisciplinary program:

  • Opening and meetings on contemporary art with art historian and critic Angela Vettese
  • Itinerant theatrical performances through the village streets, directed by Andrea Battistini
  • Concerts and musical evenings
  • Book presentations and meetings with authors
  • A symposium dedicated to art students and creative workshops for children
  • Tastings of typical Lunigiana dishes and products prepared by the residents

Tassonarla, a village to discover

Nestled in the hilly landscape of Lunigiana, Tassonarla is one of those small villages that preserve the authenticity of the lesser-known Tuscany. Visiting TassonArt means experiencing contemporary art in an intimate and evocative setting, where every work becomes part of the village's fabric and the local community plays a leading role in welcoming visitors. An experience that combines culture, nature, and tradition in the heart of the Province of Massa-Carrara.
