About Talami of Orsogna

The Talami Festival is one of the oldest religious traditions in Abruzzo, held in Orsogna, in the province of Chieti. Seven allegorical floats, known as "talami," are prepared by the town's seven districts to showcase living biblical tableaux: motionless performers recreate scenes from the Old and New Testaments against painted backdrops. The event takes place on Easter Tuesday (Martedรฌ in Albis), with a nocturnal encore on August 15th. Recognized as an "Italian Heritage for Tradition," its roots date back to the 16th century.

A centuries-old tradition in the heart of Abruzzo

The Talami Festival is among the most iconic religious events in the municipality of Orsogna, a hilltop village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The name comes from the word "talamo," referring to the large wooden platforms mounted on floats where living biblical tableaux are staged: scenic compositions in which motionless performers, often local children and teenagers, bring episodes from the Old and New Testaments to life against painted backdrops, typically dominated by a radiant sun.

The seven districts and the seven talami

The heart of the festival is the participation of the entire community: each of the seven districts of Orsogna prepares its own talamo, contributing to the seven sacred scenes that parade through the streets of the historic center. The floats, once pulled by hand and now transported by tractors, depart from their respective neighborhoods and converge in Piazza Mazzini, where the final parade takes place and where religious authorities traditionally provide public commentary on each tableau.

Origins and the Madonna del Rifugio

The tradition is documented as far back as the 16th century, when the Confraternity of the Paolotti of Orsogna reportedly paraded in Rome with living biblical representations for the Corpus Domini feast. The current form was consolidated in the 19th century. The festival is deeply intertwined with the cult of the Madonna del Rifugio: according to local legend, the Virgin appeared on an Easter Tuesday at the site where the church of the same name was later built, housing an ancient fresco of the Black Madonna.

Two annual editions

The Talami are celebrated twice a year: the main event is on Easter Tuesday (Martedรฌ in Albis), the Tuesday following Easter, held in the morning; a second, more scenic nocturnal edition is held on August 15th for Ferragosto, designed primarily for tourists and emigrants returning to the village during the summer.

A recognized heritage

In 2011, the Talami Festival was recognized as "Italian Heritage for Tradition" by the Ministry of Tourism, a testament to the cultural value and authenticity of a ritual that blends popular theater, art, and devotion. The organization is managed by the Talami Cultural Association, which coordinates the preparation of the floats and the selection of scene themes each year.
