The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is celebrated every year on September 8th, the day the Church marks the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Madonna delle Grazie district of Rocca San Giovanni, in the province of Chieti, this occasion is one of the most deeply felt and well-attended religious events for the entire community—a moment where Marian devotion intertwines with the local identity.

Rocca San Giovanni, a village on the Costa dei Trabocchi

Rocca San Giovanni is one of the most picturesque villages on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo. Perched on a rocky spur about 115 meters above sea level, it is a member of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy club and overlooks the famous Costa dei Trabocchi, with its ancient fishing platforms and crystal-clear waters. The medieval historic center, established around the year 1000 by Abbot Oderisio II, houses the Church of San Matteo Apostolo and retains the intimate atmosphere of small Abruzzo villages, where religious festivals still set the rhythm of community life.

The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is included in the official Estate Roccolana program, a series of events that accompanies Rocca San Giovanni from June to September with cultural, religious, musical, and social gatherings for all ages. The September 8th event effectively kicks off the community's season of September celebrations, which continues with other observances such as the Feast of San Gennaro and the Madonna Addolorata.
