The Giuseppe Dell'Orefice International Award is the premier cultural event of Fara Filiorum Petri, a town in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo. Established to honor the memory of composer and conductor Giuseppe Dell'Orefice (Fara Filiorum Petri, 1848 – Naples, 1889), the award recognizes individuals, institutions, and organizations that have distinguished themselves in the promotion and enhancement of musical culture, both within Abruzzo and on the international stage.
Dell'Orefice was a prominent figure in the 19th-century musical landscape. Born in Fara Filiorum Petri, he made his mark as a composer and conductor in Naples, where he staged several operas, including his most famous works, Romilda de' Bardi and Egmont, which was performed at the Teatro di San Carlo. His artistic legacy is now preserved and championed by the local community, which has made him a symbol of its cultural identity.
The ceremony takes place at PalaFara, the municipal auditorium, in the form of a gala evening. The program includes the presentation of the awards, speeches by officials, and, most importantly, live concerts featuring original compositions by Dell'Orefice, alongside works by other great Abruzzese masters such as Francesco Paolo Tosti and Antonio Di Jorio. The stage hosts a variety of sopranos, soloists, and local ensembles, creating a celebration that bridges historical memory and classical music.
Over the years, the Award has built a prestigious list of recipients, including the Istituzione Sinfonica Abruzzese, the "Luisa D'Annunzio" Conservatory of Pescara, and internationally renowned maestros such as Donato Renzetti and Enrico Melozzi. The 2025 edition, the 16th, honored the City of Atri and the "Antonio Di Jorio" Museum and Archive for their commitment to promoting musical culture.
Supported by the Abruzzo Region and the Province of Chieti, in collaboration with local musical institutions, the Giuseppe Dell'Orefice Award is now a firmly established date on the Abruzzo cultural calendar. Artistic direction has been entrusted for years to Maestro Francesco D'Urbano. Each edition reaffirms Fara Filiorum Petri's dedication to preserving and sharing the region's musical heritage.
Following the 16th edition held on November 30, 2025, the Giuseppe Dell'Orefice Award has been renewed for 2026 for its 17th edition. The exact date and program have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Fara Filiorum Petri. Following the custom of recent years, the ceremony will presumably be held in the autumn at the PalaFara, with the presentation of the award and concerts dedicated to the local composer. Details will be released in the months leading up to the event.
The ceremony is held at the PalaFara, the municipal auditorium of Fara Filiorum Petri (CH), in Abruzzo.
