In the heart of the Abruzzo winter, the small town of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, in the province of Chieti, becomes the stage for one of the region's most deeply rooted and beloved Nativity re-enactments. The Living Nativity, born in 1978 following the tradition inaugurated in Rivisondoli, has established itself over the years as an unmissable event in the Abruzzo Christmas calendar, blending popular faith, rural heritage, and strong community involvement.
The event involves over three hundred participants, some coming from neighboring towns, who wear traditional shepherd costumes to bring emotionally charged scenes to life. Through a fascinating blend of lights, music, and voices, the key moments of the birth of Jesus are re-enacted. The audience, which has exceeded one thousand attendees in recent years, arrives from all over Abruzzo and participates with deep emotion in every scene.
The most evocative moment occurs when numerous fires and torches illuminate the hill facing the scene, accompanying the shepherds' descent toward the Nativity manger: a powerful image that leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it.
During the Christmas season, in addition to the sacred pageant on December 30th, two artistic Nativity scenes are set up in Sant'Eusanio del Sangro: one inside the parish church and another in the Fontepaludi area. The village's historic center is naturally suited for this staging, with its narrow alleys, picturesque corners, and hilly landscape providing the perfect backdrop for the event.
The evening is enriched by food and wine stalls set up by local associations representing the various districts of Sant'Eusanio, where visitors can taste local products and warm up between scenes. It is the most convivial side of a festival that, beyond its spiritual value, celebrates the identity and cohesion of an entire community.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, the Living Nativity represents one of the many treasures of Abruzzo's popular festivals and traditions. Now with nearly half a century of history, it is a prime example of how a small community can preserve and pass down, from generation to generation, a heritage of faith and popular culture that continues to attract visitors from across the region.
The Living Nativity of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro returns for the 2026 Christmas season with its sacred Nativity pageant, which traditionally takes place on December 30th. As of today, the Pro Loco has not yet released the official dates and program for the 2026 edition: information will be updated as soon as it becomes available. As per tradition, the event involves over three hundred participants in shepherd costumes, with fires and torches on the hill and food stalls along the route.
The sacred pageant is traditionally held on December 30th every year, in the evening. In recent editions, Holy Mass is scheduled around 4:00 PM, with the performance beginning around 5:30 PM.
Sant'Eusanio del Sangro (CH), Abruzzo. The performance takes place throughout the historic center and the Fontepaludi area, with the scenery set up on the hill opposite.
By car, the town can be reached via the SS 652 Fondo Valle Sangro, taking the exit near Sant'Eusanio del Sangro; the nearest motorway exit is Val di Sangro on the A14. It is recommended to arrive early to find parking near the center.
The event is free of charge.
