The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the Arab Rabato district
The Sutera Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and well-known Christmas traditions in Sicily. Every year during the holidays, the ancient Arab Rabato district turns into a vast open-air nativity scene: narrow alleys, stone staircases, and traditional stone houses become the natural backdrop for the Nativity, in what the organizers themselves love to call "a nativity within a nativity." Sutera, perched at the foot of Mount San Paolino in the heart of the province of Caltanissetta, is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, and this evocative setting makes the event truly unique.
Along the route, hundreds of costumed participants bring early 20th-century rural Sicily back to life. Workshops and scenes set up in the original homes of the Rabato tell the story of ancient trades that have since disappeared: the cobbler (the putรฌa dello scarparu), the pharmacy with its old-fashioned remedies, the pasta maker, the weaver, the shepherd, and the plaster artisans. Alongside the re-enactment of the Holy Nativity, visitors embark on an authentic journey into the peasant and artisan memory of the Municipality of Sutera.
The route is enriched by tastings of typical Sutera products: li ciciri (chickpeas), lu pani cunzatu (seasoned bread), minestra di maccu (fava bean soup), and lu virciddatu (traditional cookies), accompanied by wine and herbal teas. There is no shortage of storytelling performances, the music of nativity singers, and, during the Epiphany, the evocative arrival of the Three Wise Men and a visit to the Mother Church.
Since 2005, the Sutera Living Nativity has been inscribed in the R.E.I., the Intangible Heritage Registry of the Sicily Region, in the Book of Knowledge section, a testament to its cultural and identity value. With over 20,000 visitors per edition, the event has gained national significance, becoming one of the most anticipated appointments of the Sicilian Christmas and a major draw for tourism in the Sicilian hinterland.
The 26th edition of the Sutera Living Nativity was held on December 26, 27, and 28, 2025, and January 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Rabato district hosted the re-enactment of the Nativity and over forty scenes dedicated to ancient trades: the cobbler, the old-fashioned pharmacy, the pasta maker, the weaver, and the plaster artisans.
Amidst tastings of typical Sutera products (li ciciri, lu pani cunzatu, minestra di maccu, lu virciddatu), the music of the nativity singers, and the performance of storyteller Nonรฒ Salamone, the event confirmed its appeal, welcoming thousands of visitors. The edition was also awarded the Quality Event recognition.
