About Supernova

Supernova is the Rimini review dedicated to contemporary performing arts, conceived and curated by the duo Motus (Daniela Nicolò and Enrico Casagrande) together with Santarcangelo dei Teatri and the Municipality of Rimini. For a few days, the city transforms into a widespread laboratory of dance, theatre, performance, music, and visual arts, with Italian and international artists inhabiting the Galli Theatre and a constellation of unexpected locations, from the Roman Amphitheatre to the galleries and museums of the historic center.

What is Supernova

Supernova is the Rimini project dedicated to contemporary performing arts, born in 2023 from the alliance between the company Motus, the association Santarcangelo dei Teatri, and the Municipality of Rimini, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region. The artistic direction is entrusted to Daniela Nicolò and Enrico Casagrande, founders of Motus, one of the most internationally recognized realities on the Italian theatre scene, assisted in curation by Paola Granato.

More than a traditional program, Supernova is a widespread happening: for four days, the center of Rimini becomes a temporary ecosystem where dance, theatre, performance, screenings, concerts, and installations intertwine without genre hierarchies, crossing the porous boundaries between different arts.

The venues: from the Galli Theatre to the city

The heart of the review is the Amintore Galli Theatre, an 19th-century jewel overlooking Piazza Cavour, returned to the city after a long restoration. But Supernova is not confined within the theatre walls: the festival branches out into a network of institutional and independent spaces in the historic center—from the Roman Amphitheatre to the terrace of the City Museum, from the Petrangolini Chapel to art galleries like Primo Piano—inviting the spectator to rediscover Rimini from new perspectives.

An international scene in Rimini

Supernova's programming brings together emerging artists and established names from around the world, with frequent national and European premieres. Over the years, the review has hosted performers from Argentina, Egypt, Rwanda, Greece, France, and Chile, building a temporary community that moves from day to day through the city's locations.

Each edition is guided by a strong thematic thread: from reflection on the socio-political present and the fragility of 2025 to the mangrove of 2026, a metaphor for a hybrid ecosystem and non-hierarchical connections between the human, plant, and animal worlds.

Why it's worth it

  • One of the most daring performing arts reviews in Emilia-Romagna and the entire Italian scene.
  • The curatorial signature of Motus, a company with forty years of stage research behind it.
  • The opportunity to experience the Galli Theatre and Rimini's historic center in an experimental and widespread way.
  • National and European premieres, affordable ticket prices, and numerous free activities.

Supernova takes place in Rimini, in the province of Rimini, and has established itself as one of the most anticipated spring events on the contemporary scene of the Romagna Riviera.

Supernova — edition 2026

The fourth edition of Supernova took place in Rimini from May 7 to 10, 2026, on the theme of the mangrove, a metaphor for a hybrid ecosystem and non-hierarchical connections. Over twenty artists from around the world animated the Galli Theatre and a constellation of spaces in the historic center, from the Roman Amphitheatre to the City Museum, with four days of dance, theatre, performance, screenings, and concerts.

For its fourth edition (May 7-10, 2026), Supernova chose the mangrove as its thematic focus: a hybrid ecosystem where the human, plant, and animal worlds intertwine without hierarchy. The review expanded its boundaries, moving beyond the centrality of the Galli Theatre to branch out into a constellation of institutional and independent spaces—from the Primo Piano gallery to the Petrangolini Chapel, from the Roman Amphitheatre to the terrace of the City Museum—involving over twenty international artists in four days of performing arts.

The curatorship remained entrusted to Daniela Nicolò and Enrico Casagrande (Motus) with Paola Granato, in collaboration with Santarcangelo dei Teatri and the Municipality of Rimini.
