Liberation Day in Lizzano: a blend of remembrance and live music
In Lizzano, a small town in the Salento area of Taranto, the April 25th anniversary is more than just an institutional ceremony: it is a true community celebration. With Suono Libero Urbano, the Liberation Day Festival evolves into a cultural event that bridges the memory of the Resistance with contemporary expression, bringing testimonies, civic reflection, and vibrant live music to Piazza Matteotti.
The initiative is promoted by the Taranto provincial branch of ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) alongside the AMICAS association, with the support of the Puglia Region and the Province of Taranto. The core idea is clear: to reinterpret the values of April 25th—freedom, justice, and participation—as pillars that remain relevant to our society today, speaking directly to the younger generations.
The day is structured into two complementary parts. In the late afternoon, Piazza Matteotti hosts an institutional session titled "From the Resistance to Democracy: What Matters Today," where speeches, personal testimonies, and musical interludes alternate to bring the profound meaning of Liberation into the present.
As evening falls, the square changes its face and lights up: it becomes a massive open-air stage for the Suono Libero Urbano concert. The artistic direction creates a dynamic musical journey that spans from singer-songwriter styles to indie-electronic and hip-hop, concluding with a final DJ set.
The heart of the project is the promotion of local young talent. The Lizzano stage hosts a rotating lineup of emerging singer-songwriters, bands, and producers from Puglia, in a format designed to give visibility to those driving the local music scene. The result is an evening where civic commitment and popular celebration coexist, restoring a joyful and communal spirit to April 25th.
Suono Libero Urbano is free and open to the public: an opportunity for Lizzano residents and visitors from neighboring towns to experience Liberation Day together, surrounded by the square, music, and community. It is a model of how Puglia knows how to combine historical roots with a contemporary outlook.
The 2026 edition of Suono Libero Urbano was held on Saturday, April 25th, in Piazza Matteotti, Lizzano (Taranto), promoted by the provincial ANPI of Taranto and the AMICAS association with the support of the Puglia Region and the Province of Taranto.
The evening opened with a moment of civic reflection and concluded with a long concert dedicated to urban languages and singer-songwriter music, in a dynamic format that featured numerous emerging local artists on stage, ending with a final DJ set.
In Piazza Matteotti, the event kicks off with "From the Resistance to Democracy: What Matters Today," hosted by Debora Notarnicola. Speeches, testimonies, and musical interludes reinterpret the values of freedom, justice, and participation, with a particular focus on the younger generations.
The square transforms into a large open-air stage for the concert under the artistic direction of Rod Mannara, in a dynamic format similar to Battiti Live. The musical journey ranges from singer-songwriter styles to indie-electronic and hip-hop, closing with a final DJ set.
Numerous emerging local artists took turns on stage:
The event takes place in Piazza Matteotti, in the center of Lizzano (Taranto), Puglia.
Lizzano can be reached by car via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting Taranto to Salento; the nearest train station is served by the line connecting Taranto to Lecce. During the festival, the town center may be partially closed to traffic: it is recommended to park in the streets adjacent to the square.
Participation in all initiatives is free of charge.
