About Summer Solstice

Every June, in the village of Colli, Monte San Giovanni Campano, the Summer Solstice Festival turns Piazza Aldo Moro into the most anticipated stage of the Ciociaria summer. Organized by the GenerAZione Colli association—a group of young people in their early twenties—the festival brings together top names from the Italian rap and urban scene, emerging local talent, and the 'Corsa del Solstizio' road race. Four free, open-air days that draw thousands of visitors from across the Frosinone province.

A grassroots festival in the heart of Ciociaria

The Summer Solstice Festival is the event that, every year around the longest day of the year, lights up the village of Colli, in Monte San Giovanni Campano, in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio. It was not born from a municipal program or a large private operator: it is the project of the GenerAZione Colli association, a group of local youths who chose to invest their time, energy, and self-funding to bring a musical program to a Ciociaria village that is usually only seen in big cities.

The result is one of the most popular events of the provincial summer: Piazza Aldo Moro, the heart of Colli, fills up until late at night, with an audience arriving from all over the territory and neighboring areas. Admission is free, and this remains one of the festival's defining traits.

The music: rap, urban, and new Italian voices

The Summer Solstice Festival has built its reputation on the Italian rap and urban scene. Some of the most followed artists in the genre have graced the stage in Colli, joined by contemporary pop and singer-songwriter projects and, above all, a strong presence of emerging talent: collectives, beatmakers, and rappers from Ciociaria who find a real stage here, with professional sound equipment and a real audience.

This dual identity—national names and the local scene—is the formula that has helped the event grow year after year. The evenings follow an urban festival rhythm: opening acts by local groups, followed by DJ sets, and finally the headliners, with the square often buzzing well past the scheduled time.

The Corsa del Solstizio

Alongside the music, the festival promotes sports with the Corsa del Solstizio, a 9.9-kilometer road race organized in partnership with Atletica Ceprano. It takes place on a Sunday in the late afternoon, starting and finishing right in Piazza Aldo Moro: a challenging route with significant elevation changes on the hills around the town, which has exceeded two hundred and fifty entries in recent years. The entry fee is affordable, and timing is handled by professional services.

Why it's worth the trip

  • Free admission to all musical evenings in an open-air square.
  • National-level line-up in the rap and urban scene, rare for a town of this size.
  • Space for young local artists who open the main evenings.
  • A road race open to everyone as the closing event.
  • Entirely volunteer-run, giving the festival a communal, non-commercial atmosphere.

Colli and Monte San Giovanni Campano

Monte San Giovanni Campano is a town in Ciociaria known primarily for its medieval castle, where tradition says Saint Thomas Aquinas was held prisoner. The village overlooks the Liri valley and is located just a few kilometers from Frosinone, Sora, and Isola del Liri. Colli is one of the most populous hamlets in the municipality, nestled on the olive-covered hills that characterize this part of Lazio.

Visitors arriving for the festival will find, beyond the music, a territory worth exploring: the historic center of Monte San Giovanni Campano, the Ciociaria cuisine—fini fini pasta, lamb, mountain cheeses, local extra virgin olive oil—and, nearby, the waterfalls of Isola del Liri and the Abbey of Casamari.

A model for a youth-led festival

What is most striking about the Summer Solstice Festival from the outside is its social sustainability: a group of young people managing to raise the bar every year, building relationships with agencies and artists, and handling the security and logistics of a crowded square. It has become a summer landmark for Ciociaria and a frequently cited example of how youth initiative can animate small towns in the Lazio hinterland.
