About Walking Day

Every October, the Lago di Posta Fibreno Regional Nature Reserve joins the National Walking Day promoted by FederTrek, offering a free guided excursion open to everyone. A 9-10 kilometer loop trail leads participants through springs, the historic village center, and the shores of one of the most unique karst lakes in the Lazio region, famous for its floating island. Park rangers and environmental guides share insights into the geology, flora, and fauna of the protected area along the way.

Walking to discover the Lago di Posta Fibreno

The Walking Day is the autumn highlight of the Lago di Posta Fibreno Regional Nature Reserve, located in the municipality of Posta Fibreno, in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria area and the Lazio region. Every year, on the second Sunday of October, the reserve participates in the National Walking Day promoted by FederTrek, a widespread event that invites associations, schools, parks, and municipalities across Italy to rediscover the territory at a slow pace.

A unique karst lake in Italy

The Lago di Posta Fibreno is no ordinary basin: it is a karst lake fed by underground springs that flow at a constant temperature throughout the year, a phenomenon that has allowed relict species from the glacial era to survive. Its most famous attraction is the Rota, the floating island already mentioned by Pliny the Elder: a natural raft of peat and vegetation that moves slowly across the water's surface. The protected area, established by the Lazio Region, safeguards a mosaic of wetlands, flooded meadows, reed beds, and riparian forests of great naturalistic value.

The route

The excursion follows a loop of approximately 9-10 kilometers, with a moderate elevation gain (around 200-250 meters) and a tourist-hiking difficulty level suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness. The trail typically includes:

  • the Reserve headquarters in Contrada Carpello, the starting and finishing point;
  • the historic center of Posta Fibreno with its museum;
  • the old water mill, a testament to the valley's rural economy;
  • the springs and the shores of the lake, with viewpoints overlooking the floating island;
  • the trails within the protected area, amidst wet meadows and riparian vegetation.

Along the way, park rangers and AIGAE environmental hiking guides offer stops to delve into geology, karst phenomena, birdlife, and flora, turning the walk into a true open-air lesson.

A collective walk

The Walking Day in Posta Fibreno is traditionally a choral event: recent editions have seen the participation of the CAI of Gallinaro, ASI, Legambiente of Sessa Aurunca, the Nordic Walking ASD of Frosinone, and the ASD Albalonga, bringing several hundred participants to the reserve. The event concludes with a social gathering that has become an integral part of the day, an opportunity to exchange impressions and taste local products.

Why participate

October is perhaps the best month to visit the Fibreno valley: the raking light, the colors of the forest, and the lower tourist turnout reveal the protected area in its most authentic dimension. The initiative is free and designed for families, groups, and casual walkers, representing a simple way to connect with a natural heritage that many visitors to Lazio have yet to discover.

Walking Day — edition 2026

The Lago di Posta Fibreno Regional Nature Reserve is expected to renew its participation in the National Walking Day in 2026, the national initiative promoted by FederTrek that falls every year on the second weekend of October. At the time of data collection, the official date and program for the 2026 edition had not yet been published: it is recommended to check the parchilazio.it website or the Reserve's Facebook page.

2026 Edition

For 2026, the Lago di Posta Fibreno Regional Nature Reserve has not yet released the autumn calendar: the date indicated is therefore purely indicative and corresponds to the period in which the National Walking Day traditionally takes place. The reserve remains very active, however, with a busy program of thematic excursions already announced for spring and summer 2026 (birdwatching, geology and karst, wild herbs, forest tales, truffle hunting), a sign that the October event should also be proposed.

What to expect

Based on previous editions, the excursion should consist of a 9-10 kilometer loop starting from the Reserve headquarters in Contrada Carpello, accompanied by park rangers and environmental guides, and concluding with a social gathering. Participation is free with mandatory booking.

Programme Walking Day 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the Reserve. The event is expected for the second Sunday of October, with a morning gathering at the Reserve headquarters in Contrada Carpello in Posta Fibreno and the start of the loop excursion. Official information, including booking methods, will be released on the parchilazio.it website and the Reserve's social channels in the weeks preceding the event.
