About August Festival

Every August, Partinico comes to a standstill to celebrate its patron saint, Maria Santissima del Ponte, with the traditional August Festival. This centuries-old event weaves together religious devotion—culminating in the solemn procession of the icon through the town streets—with a rich secular program of concerts, cabaret, fashion shows, and performances that bring Piazza Duomo and the historic center to life. Amidst illuminations, market stalls, and music, it is the most heartfelt appointment of the Partinico summer, drawing faithful and visitors from across the province of Palermo.

The August Festival of Partinico

The Summer Celebrations of the Madonna del Ponte, known to locals simply as the August Festival, represent the most anticipated event of the summer in Partinico, in the province of Palermo (Sicily). For several days between early and mid-August, the entire community gathers around the venerated image of Maria Santissima del Ponte, the city's patron saint, in a festival that blends the sacred and the profane, as per ancient Sicilian tradition.

The roots of a centuries-old devotion

The cult of the Madonna del Ponte has its origins in the Middle Ages. The sanctuary that houses it was built between 1386 and 1392, when the Partinico territory was administered by the Cistercian abbots of the Santa Maria di Altofonte monastery, to whom King Frederick II of Aragon had donated these lands. The symbolic date of the summer festival, however, dates back to August 15, 1861, the day of the icon's coronation by the Vatican Chapter: since then, Partinico has honored its Sovereign on August 6, 7, and 8, with the first two days dedicated to folkloric events and the last to the solemn procession.

The procession and rituals

The highlight is the procession of the Madonna's icon, placed on a ceremonial float (vara) and carried on shoulders through the main streets of the town, welcomed by civil authorities, the clergy, and a crowd of the faithful. Liturgical celebrations are held in the Mother Church and at the sanctuary, accompanied by performances from the marching band and the illuminations that light up the center.

Shows, music, and folklore

Alongside the religious dimension, the August Festival offers a rich secular program that transforms Piazza Duomo into the beating heart of the event: concerts, tribute bands, comedy and cabaret shows, fashion shows, market stalls, and food and wine experiences. It is a popular festival that unites the deep Marian faith of the people of Partinico with the desire to come together and build community during the warm August evenings.

A defining identity

For Partinico, the August Festival is not just a simple summer event, but a defining trait of its identity passed down from generation to generation. Those visiting the city during these days can breathe in the authentic atmosphere of a Sicilian patronal feast, amidst devotion, tradition, and conviviality.

The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the summer celebrations have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Partinico.
