The patronal feast of Carini, blending popular devotion, music, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival is the primary religious and popular event in Carini, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Celebrated every year in September, the festival brings together an entire community that has been renewing its devotion to the statues of the Crucifix and Saint Vitus, the town's historical patron, for over a century. The first documented procession dates back to 1904, but the cult of the Crucifix in Carini has much older roots.
Tradition links Carini to a popular tale shared with the nearby towns of Monreale and Montelepre. According to the legend, a 16th-century sculptor was commissioned to create three wooden Crucifixes: the head of the third statue was said to have been miraculously completed in a single night, leading each of the three communities to claim the prodigious sculpture as their own. It is a story that perfectly captures the deep, identity-defining bond between the people of Carini and their Crucifix.
The heart of the festival is the evening of September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Following solemn mass, the procession of the Santissimo Crocifisso and Saint Vitus statues begins around 9:00 PM, winding through the streets of the historic center. Many faithful participate with lit candles, and many follow the procession barefoot as a vow of devotion, accompanied by the town band. The day concludes with the traditional fireworks display at midnight, illuminating the skies over Carini.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich entertainment program centered in Piazza Duomo, the beating heart of the evening festivities. Recent editions have featured tribute concerts, 90s dance parties, Sicilia Cabaret shows with Sicilian comedians, and live performances by local and regional artists, as well as concerts by the town band. Exhibitions and cultural initiatives round out the program spread across various locations in the town.
For several days, Carini comes alive with stalls, music, and celebrations that draw residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. Over the years, the municipal administration has provided a free shuttle service to the center during the main evenings to facilitate access. The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival remains one of the most deeply felt identity-defining events in the Palermo area, where popular faith intertwines with public celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Santissimo Crocifisso Festival in Carini is expected, as per tradition, in the month of September, with the highlight on the evening of the 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. As of now, the Municipality of Carini has not yet released the definitive dates or the entertainment lineup. In line with previous editions, the solemn procession of the Crucifix and Saint Vitus statues through the historic center, the final fireworks display, and several evenings of music and cabaret in Piazza Duomo are expected. The complete program will be announced by the municipal administration closer to the event.
Carini is located along the Tyrrhenian coast west of Palermo. By car, take the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway and exit at Carini. By train, the Carini station is served by the regional Palermo-Trapani line. The town is just a few kilometers from the Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport.
Evening events are concentrated in Piazza Duomo, in the historic center. On the main evenings, a free shuttle service to the center is usually provided.
Access to the square performances and the procession is free.
