The grand medieval festival at the foot of Castel Coira, in Sluderno, Vinschgau Valley
For three days at the end of August, the small town of Sluderno/Schluderns in the Vinschgau Valley (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) transforms into one of the largest medieval encampments in the entire Alpine region. The Südtiroler Ritterspiele—the South Tyrol Medieval Games—draw over twenty thousand visitors each year to the meadows at the foot of Castel Coira (Churburg), the fortress that dominates the valley floor and, with its famous armory, provides the perfect natural backdrop for the re-enactment.
The historical setting is among the most evocative in South Tyrol: beyond Castel Coira, the view encompasses the ruins of Castel Montechiaro (Lichtenberg), the Fürstenburg in Burgusio, and, higher up, the Abbey of Monte Maria (Marienberg), the highest Benedictine monastery in Europe. In this setting, over two thousand participants from eleven countries bring to life the most extensive program in the Alpine region.
The heart of the event lies in the spectacular battles and knightly tournaments, featuring mounted knights, archers, flag-wavers, and falconry displays. All around, a true medieval village comes to life: blacksmiths, artisans, merchants, jesters, musicians, and taverns recreate the atmosphere of the Late Middle Ages, while stalls of the grand medieval market line the paths.
The Ritterspiele are, above all, a festival for both young and old. On the meadow, attractions are free: shows, camel and donkey rides, archery, children's tournaments, a petting zoo, carousels, and entertainment. An entrance ticket is required to access the main performance area, where the most impressive re-enactments are concentrated.
The culinary experience is entrusted to chefs specializing in medieval cuisine, featuring skewers, breads, sweets, and specialties served in the camp taverns, accompanied by typical products from the Vinschgau Valley. The event is organized by the Verein Südtiroler Ritterspiele together with local associations, involving hundreds of volunteers from Sluderno.
Now in its 19th edition, the event occupies the meadows at the foot of Castel Coira from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23, 2026. Opening hours are from 10:00 AM until late evening on Friday and Saturday, and until 10:00 PM on Sunday.
In 2026, over two thousand participants from eleven countries are expected: spectacular battles and knightly tournaments, archers and falconers, jesters, musicians, and street artists. Free attractions on the meadow include camel and donkey rides, archery, children's tournaments, a petting zoo, carousels, and entertainment.
Access to the main performance area requires a ticket, with three-day passes, daily and evening tickets, reduced rates for children and teenagers, and family tickets available. Advance booking, available until mid-August, offers more favorable rates.
Sluderno/Schluderns is easily reached via the modern Vinschgau Valley railway (Vinschgerbahn): it is just a five-minute walk from the station to the event area. By car, follow the Vinschgau Valley state road (SS40/SS38); dedicated parking is available near the village.
Attractions on the meadow are free; a ticket is required for the main performance area (three-day pass, daily or evening tickets, with discounted rates for advance purchases and family tickets). Information and advance sales at www.ritterspiele.it.
