About Subbiano Carnival

The Subbiano Children's Carnival is one of the most beloved Carnival celebrations in the Casentino area, in the province of Arezzo. For over fifty years, the local Pro Loco has brought the historic center to life with parades of allegorical floats, marching bands, costumes, and plenty of games for the little ones. Enjoy three Sundays of free festivities, featuring the 'Mascherina d'Oro' contest, a food court, and the famous grand finale: the burning of King Giocondo.

A Carnival tradition spanning over half a century

The Subbiano Children's Carnival is a historic event in the Casentino, the valley of the municipality of Subbiano in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. Established in its modern form in 1974, it celebrates its 52nd edition in 2026, confirming its status as one of the most cherished and well-attended Carnival events in the Arezzo region. Organized by the Pro Loco of Subbiano with the support of the municipality, this Carnival is designed entirely for children and families, fostering a serene and lighthearted festive atmosphere.

Allegorical float parades

The heart of the festival lies in the grand parades of allegorical floats that wind through the historic center of Subbiano. These papier-mâché floats, crafted by volunteers over the preceding months, fill the streets accompanied by marching and folk bands, costumed groups, performances, and dancing. Highlights for 2026 include floats such as Cinderella, the spectacular Pirate Ship, and the year's big newcomer, Merlin and the Dragon—a new float with interactive movements purchased by the Pro Loco to provide even more entertainment for the kids. The procession is completed by the two little trains, Paperopoli and Mother Goose, which children can ride for free.

Games, workshops, and the 'Mascherina d'Oro'

The Subbiano Carnival is, above all, a festival for children. Along the route, you will find inflatable play areas, face painting, giant soap bubbles, and plenty of entertainment. Throughout the event, the Mascherina d'Oro (Golden Mask) competition takes place in several stages, rewarding the most beautiful and creative costumes worn by the young participants. Those who want to experience the festival from behind the scenes can visit the Carnival workshop and try their hand at papier-mâché crafting.

The food court

During the parades, the historic center fills with the scents of Casentino tradition. The food court offers typical Tuscan Carnival specialties: chiacchiere (sweet fried ribbons) and frittelle (fritters), along with doughnuts, ciacce flatbreads, and sandwiches to enjoy while strolling among the floats.

The grand finale: the burning of King Giocondo

The festival culminates on the final Sunday with the Gran Cuccagna: a free distribution of pasta with sauce and wine for all attendees. The most anticipated moment is the traditional burning of King Giocondo, accompanied by lanterns—a propitiatory ritual that closes the Carnival and symbolically paves the way for spring and the year's agricultural festivals, starting with the Grape Festival Re-enactment.

A family-friendly Carnival

With free admission and a program tailored for the little ones, the Subbiano Children's Carnival is the ideal destination for a family Sunday in February in the Casentino. Between colors, music, and tradition, it represents one of the most authentic ways to experience Carnival in the Arezzo countryside.
