About Strudà Living Nativity

The Strudà Living Nativity is one of the most evocative Christmas re-enactments in the Salento region. Every year, between late December and Epiphany, the small village of Strudà, a hamlet of Vernole in the province of Lecce, transforms into a Nativity village. Dozens of costumed performers bring shepherds, artisans, centurions, the Three Wise Men, and the Holy Family to life along a path guided by a giant comet. This tradition, managed by the Nuovi Orizzonti association, has been drawing visitors from across Salento and Puglia for nearly thirty years.

The Strudà Living Nativity

The Strudà Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated events of the Christmas season in Salento. It takes place in Strudà, a small hamlet in the municipality of Vernole, in the province of Lecce, where the historic centre and the surrounding countryside become the stage for a grand Nativity representation. The event is organised by the Nuovi Orizzonti Cultural Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Vernole and local Pro Loco associations, with the participation of residents who take on the roles of the Nativity characters.

A journey through the Nativity scenes

Visitors walk through a fully reconstructed village, where each scene reproduces ancient crafts and daily life from the time of Jesus' birth. Along the path, you will encounter shepherds, artisans at work, centurions, the Three Wise Men and, at the heart of it all, the Holy Family with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus. Guiding the public along the route is a spectacular comet, 9 metres high and 25 metres long, which lights the way through the numerous outdoor settings.

A tradition of Vernole and Salento

The living nativity is a ritual deeply rooted in Apulian popular culture, and the Strudà edition is one of the most renowned in the Lecce hinterland. The representation blends religious devotion with community spirit: the performers are mostly local residents of all ages who renew their commitment to recreating an entire peasant world every year. The staging is curated by artistic director Antonio Mazzeo, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco associations of Strudà, Acaya, and Pisignano, and the Piccolo Teatro della Neve.

Recent editions

In December 2025, the Strudà Living Nativity reached its 28th edition, confirming its status as a staple of the Salento Christmas calendar. Among the initiatives of the latest edition, the Strudà Pro Loco organised a special visit dedicated to visually impaired people, demonstrating the community's commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

When and where

The nativity is set up near the Strudà-Acquarica provincial road and opens to the public in the evenings between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany. It is an ideal destination for a family stroll during the holidays, immersed in the atmosphere of a Salento Christmas.
