In the heart of Salento, the Madonna del Carmine Festival is among the most anticipated events of the summer in Borgagne, a small and characteristic village in the municipality of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce, Puglia. Every year, around July 16thโthe day the Church celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmelโthe entire community gathers in prayer and celebration around the image of the Madonna, kept in the village's historic chapel.
The cult of the Madonna del Carmine has its roots in one of the oldest traditions of Christian devotion, linked to Mount Carmel in the Holy Land and the Carmelite Order. In Borgagne, this devotion finds its home in a chapel dating back to the 17th century, which has been a spiritual landmark for the village's inhabitants for centuries. As the local clergy remind us, the festival represents a powerful moment of faith and community, where the people of Borgagne renew their bond with the Virgin.
The heart of the festival is religious. On the evening of July 15th, the eve of the solemnity, a vigil mass is celebrated, followed by the traditional and highly anticipated procession that accompanies the image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel through the streets of the village, amidst the moving participation of the faithful. Celebrations continue on July 16th with holy masses.
Alongside the sacred rites, the Borgagne Festival Committee organizes a rich secular program that enlivens the evenings: stunning illuminations light up the town center, the brass band cheers the days with traditional concerts, and the festival concludes with a fireworks display. Piazza Madonna del Carmine hosts evenings of Salento folk music: in past editions, the stage has featured pizzica groups and local folk bands, keeping both young and old dancing until late at night.
The festival is part of the wider summer calendar of the Municipality of Melendugno, an area known for its crystal-clear coastal waters and a summer full of events. With its historic center and rural identity, Borgagne offers an authentic glimpse of the most genuine Salento, where popular faith, traditional music, and conviviality intertwine in a free festival open to all.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. The event, tied to the liturgical date of July 16th, is traditionally renewed every year; it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Melendugno and the Borgagne Festival Committee for the updated program.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Borgagne Festival Committee and the Municipality of Melendugno in the weeks leading up to the festival. The event is traditionally celebrated around July 16th, the day of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.
Borgagne is a village in the municipality of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Lecce to the Salento Adriatic coast; the nearest train station is in Lecce, about 20 km away. The reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, about 50 km away.
All religious and secular events are free and open to everyone.
The evenings in Piazza Madonna del Carmine are very popular: it is advisable to arrive early. In summer, it is best to book accommodation in the Melendugno coastal areas (San Foca, Torre dell'Orso, Roca) well in advance.
