The Torrazza Piemonte road race blending sport and Fried Tomino cheese
StraTominando is the annual running event that draws runners, walkers, and families to Torrazza Piemonte, a town in the province of Turin overlooking the Canavese plains between the Po and Dora Baltea rivers. Established just a few years ago, the race has grown rapidly to become a staple of the regional FIDAL Piedmont calendar, successfully combining competitive road running with the warmth of a local village festival.
The sporting heart of the event is the 9.2 km competitive race, FIDAL-certified and organized in collaboration with Atletica Santhià, open to registered athletes and valid for regional rankings. Alongside the competitive race, there are two non-competitive routes of 5 km and 9 km, designed for those who wish to participate recreationally, walk with friends, or enjoy the day with family. The tracks wind through the streets of Torrazza Piemonte and extend partly toward the neighboring town of Verolengo, crossing roads such as Via Santa Chiara, the Strada Provinciale 90, and Via Lungo Canale Cavour, on a predominantly fast, paved surface.
The hallmark of StraTominando is its bond with the Fried Tomino Festival, the gastronomic celebration honoring the region's iconic cheese. The race is held in conjunction with the festival: once the finish line is crossed, participants and spectators meet in Piazza 1° Maggio for an athlete's lunch featuring fried tomino, turning the race into a true community celebration. This combination of sport and Piedmontese cuisine makes the event unique in the Turin provincial running scene.
The event is organized by the Associazione Amici di Roby, a local group active in the town for over ten years, in collaboration with Atletica Santhià. Their focus on hospitality, inclusivity for children (participation is open from age 8 and up), and conviviality makes StraTominando much more than just a race: it is an opportunity to discover Torrazza Piemonte and the traditions of the Canavese while running or walking through its streets.
Torrazza Piemonte can be reached by car via the A4 Turin-Milan motorway (nearby exits) and the SS11. By train, the Chivasso station, just a few kilometers away, is well-connected to Turin. The start and finish are in Piazza 1° Maggio.
Online registration is available on the official website and running platforms; you can also register in person at the designated newsstand or during bib collection. Estimated fees: approximately €12 for the competitive and 9 km non-competitive races, and about €10 for the 5 km non-competitive race, with possible surcharges for on-site registration.
