The scenic road race in Mottola, the 'Spy of the Ionian'
The Strapanoramica Mottolese is one of the most anticipated summer running events in the Taranto area. It takes place in Mottola, a town in the Province of Taranto, Apulia, nestled at an altitude of nearly 400 meters on the edge of the Murgia plateau: hence its nickname, 'Spy of the Ionian', as the village offers views spanning the entire Gulf of Taranto and the plains down to the sea. This scenery is exactly what gives the race its name: Strapanoramica, the race of panoramas.
The route winds through the historic center and the town streets with a design that is anything but flat: steep climbs, fast descents, and the traditional staircase that tests runners' legs every year. The competitive race covers a certified loop of approximately 8.5 km, while those not competing can choose the 9 km recreational route. Every turn offers a different perspective of the Murgia landscape, turning the physical effort into a visual delight.
The Strapanoramica is about more than just competition. Alongside the competitive race reserved for registered athletes, the event offers a 6 km recreational route open to walkers, families, and enthusiasts of all levels. It is a format that combines sport, health, and social interaction, in line with the spirit of the organizing association.
Behind the race is the A.S.D. Correre รจ Salute Mottola, the association that has been promoting running in the area for over thirty years and manages every detail of the organization. The Strapanoramica is now a staple of the Apulian running calendar, attracting runners from across the region and neighboring provinces, turning the streets of Mottola into a celebration of sport in the heart of summer.
The 32nd edition is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2026, with an evening start from Piazza XX Settembre to take advantage of milder temperatures after the afternoon heat. It is an ideal opportunity to run or walk through the alleys of the 'Spy of the Ionian' and experience the community atmosphere that defines this event.
