About Strataranto Half Marathon

The Strataranto Mediterranean Half Marathon is Taranto's most beloved running event: a 21.097 km half marathon that winds through the heart of the 'City of Two Seas,' from the iconic swing bridge to the narrow alleys of the old town and along the Ionian seafront. Organized by A.S.D. Podistica Taras, the event features a national FIDAL competitive race alongside a non-competitive fun run open to everyone. Over the years, it has become a true symbol of sporting tradition in Puglia.

The signature half marathon of Taranto

The Strataranto Mediterranean Half Marathon is one of the longest-running and most recognizable road races in Puglia. Established in the late 1970s, the race has accompanied the sporting life of the Municipality of Tarantoโ€”the provincial capital nestled between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccoloโ€”for decades. Reaching its 48th edition in 2026, the race is organized by A.S.D. Podistica Taras (FIDAL club TA408) and stands as a symbol of resilience and sporting continuity for the entire Ionian city.

A route between two seas

The course is what makes the Strataranto a unique experience in the Italian half marathon landscape. The 21.097 km competitive race, FIDAL-certified, starts from the Lungomare Rotunda and heads towards Piazza Ebalia, before reaching the central Via D'Aquino. After crossing the spectacular swing bridge, runners traverse the entire perimeter of the Old Town, the ancient island that holds the historical heart of Taranto, also passing over the Stone Bridge. The return journey to the Rotunda offers the final spectacle of the Naval Base, with military ships moored in the harbor providing a stunning backdrop.

Two races for everyone

The event is not just for competitive athletes. Alongside the competitive half marathon, reserved for FIDAL members and Runcard holders, there is an 8.5 km non-competitive fun run, open to all and designed for families, amateurs, and enthusiasts. This shorter route also crosses the heart of the city, from the swing bridge to the alleys of the old town, allowing everyone to experience the race atmosphere without the pressure of a clock.

An event that brings the city to a standstill

During the days of the Strataranto, Taranto rallies around its race: streets are closed to traffic, road layouts are modified, and hundreds of runners festively invade the city center. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Taranto and with the collaboration of local entities, including, over the years, the Italian Air Force Volunteers School. For those who love combining sport with exploring the region, the Strataranto is the ideal opportunity to discover Taranto and its province, amidst Magna Graecia history, the sea, and a deep-rooted running tradition.
