The Taranto marathon between the Mar Piccolo and Mar Grande
The Due Mari Marathon is the international marathon of Taranto, in Puglia, a road race covering the classic 42.195 km distance. It takes its name from the two bodies of water that define the geography of this Ionian city: the Mar Piccolo and the Mar Grande. Organized by ASD Nuova Atletica Taranto, the event was launched in 2025 with the goal of finally providing the city with a major urban marathon capable of attracting runners from all over Italy.
The race kicks off at the Giardini Virgilio in the heart of Taranto, following a route that is both a race and a story of the city. After crossing the center along Corso Due Mari, via D'Aquino, and via Di Palma, the course skirts the Military Arsenal and the SVAM area, continuing along the second inlet of the Mar Piccolo as far as Parco Cimino. The track reaches the circummarpiccolo, with a turnaround near the Histรฒ, and returns toward the finish line by the Mar Grande Naval Station: a scenic finale that offers marathoners a glimpse of Taranto's maritime and military identity.
The competitive program is not limited to the individual marathon. Alongside the 42.195 km race, there are two relay formats designed to encourage participation for those not tackling the full distance:
The Due Mari Marathon is a full-fledged sports weekend, featuring an Athlete's Village, meetings, technical conferences, and entertainment in the days leading up to the race, as well as tastings of local products. The event is supported by the Municipality of Taranto and the Regional Council of Puglia, confirming the race's ambition to become a staple of the Apulian running calendar and a key tool for promoting tourism in the city of the two seas.
The second edition of the Due Mari Marathon will take place in Taranto on Sunday, November 15, 2026. Following the 2025 debut, the ASD Nuova Atletica Taranto confirms the appointment with the city marathon, starting from the Giardini Virgilio and finishing in the center of the Ionian city.
For 2026, the classic 42.195 km marathon and the half-marathon are announced, along the route connecting the Mar Piccolo and Mar Grande. The detailed program, including times, services, and registration fees, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the race on the official website duemarimarathon.it.
The start is at the Giardini Virgilio in the center of Taranto. By car, you can reach the city via the SS7 and SS106 Ionian roads; the nearest A14 motorway exit is Bari-Taranto. The Taranto Centrale train station is just a few minutes from the center. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about an hour and a half away.
Registrations are handled online via the dedicated timing platform; the race office for bib collection is open in the days leading up to the event. For updated fees and regulations, please visit the official website duemarimarathon.it.
As this is an autumn race along the sea, we recommend technical clothing suitable for mild temperatures and potential wind. Numerous accommodation options are available in the city center and along the seafront.
