The Epiphany road race in Faggiano, in the heart of the Ionian Land
The Strabefana is one of the most beloved road races in the Apulian running calendar, held punctually on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, through the streets of Faggiano, a small town in the Province of Taranto, Puglia. Established in the mid-2000s and now in its twenty-first edition, the event has become a staple for those who love to start the year with a run, combining sport with the popular Befana festivities.
The race covers a distance of approximately 9.6 kilometres, with start and finish in Piazza Aldo Moro, in the town centre. The course, almost entirely flat, first winds through the streets of Faggiano's historic centre before continuing along rural roads immersed in the Ionian countryside, offering athletes a fast route that is also ideal for those looking for a good early-season time.
The Strabefana plays a special role in the regional landscape: it is the first stage of the Gran Prix di Corsa in Terra Jonica, the circuit that accompanies runners in the Taranto area throughout the season. A regional-level race included in the FIDAL calendar, it is open to Allievi, Juniores, Promesse, and Seniores categories, both male and female, and gathers several hundred participants from clubs across Puglia every year.
The event is organized by ASD Podistica Faggiano V.P. Service, a historic local sports association, with the support of the Municipality of Faggiano. On the morning of the Epiphany, the town centre comes alive with runners, families, and spectators: the Strabefana is not just a competition, but a celebration that involves the entire community, in perfect harmony with the convivial spirit of the Befana tradition.
The twenty-first edition of the Strabefana was held on January 6, 2026, on the day of the Epiphany, with the meeting point and start in Piazza Aldo Moro in Faggiano. On the 9.6 km course, victory went to Giuseppe Santoruvo (Dynamyk Fitness), the first to cross the finish line with a time of 32'09". The event officially opened the Gran Prix di Corsa in Terra Jonica, confirming the Strabefana as one of the most followed opening events of the regional FIDAL calendar.
Faggiano is located in the Ionian hinterland, a few kilometres from Taranto. By car, it can be reached via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting Taranto and San Giorgio Jonico. The reference railway station is Taranto, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The meeting point, start, and finish are located in Piazza Aldo Moro, in the centre of Faggiano. The race takes place on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany.
Registration is handled through FIDAL clubs according to the event's technical regulations. For information, you can contact the organizers at ASD Podistica Faggiano V.P. Service at [email protected].
