The solemn mass in the chapel of Castel Tirolo in honor of the patron saint
Every year, coinciding with the liturgical feast on May 12th, the chapel of Castel Tirolo (Schloss Tirol) hosts a solemn Mass in honor of St. Pancras, the patron saint of the castle's chapel. The event takes place in the municipality of Tirolo/Tirol, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol, and renews a devotional tradition with roots reaching back to the Middle Ages.
The castle chapel was built around 1138 during the reconstruction of the Palas and transformed into a two-story lordly chapel by Count Meinhard II around 1285. From its inception, it was consecrated to St. Pancras (Hl. Pankratius), a young martyr venerated in the Middle Ages primarily as a protector against false oaths—a dedication that reflected the importance placed on fidelity in solemn oaths at the time. Anniversary foundations and patronal celebrations have been preserved through the centuries, testifying to the continuity of this devotion.
The celebration is held in one of the castle's most precious spaces. The chapel houses works of extraordinary value:
Castel Tirolo is the manor that gave its name to the entire historical region of Tyrol. Today it houses the South Tyrol Museum of History and is one of the most visited destinations in the Merano area. Attending the St. Pancras Mass means experiencing an authentic moment of spirituality in a setting of exceptional historical and scenic significance, amidst the vineyards and orchards surrounding the castle hill.
The religious service is open to everyone, believers and curious visitors alike, who wish to discover the chapel and its history up close. Participation is an opportunity to rediscover the deep bond between South Tyrol's artistic heritage and the devotional traditions that have accompanied it for nearly nine centuries.
The 2026 St. Pancras Mass took place on May 12, 2026, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Castel Tirolo, in Tirolo (Bolzano). The religious service, organized as part of the activities of the South Tyrol Museum of History, honored the patron saint of the chapel on his feast day, in a space adorned with medieval stained glass, Gothic frescoes, and Romanesque reliefs.
Castel Tirolo is located in Tirolo/Tirol (BZ), a few kilometers from Merano. By car, reach Merano via the A22 motorway (Bolzano Sud exit) and then the MeBo expressway; from Tirolo, a short pedestrian path leads to the castle. By train, arrive at Merano station, then take the bus towards Tirolo.
The Mass is held on May 12th at 3:00 PM in the castle chapel. For information on admission and access to the manor during the event, please contact the museum (+39 0473 220221, [email protected]).
We recommend comfortable clothing for the short walk to the castle and attire appropriate for a place of worship.
