The solstice night between the memory of the 1765 landslide and the district Palio in Roccamontepiano
The St. John the Baptist Fires, combined with the Palio dei Fuochi, are the most heartfelt summer event in Roccamontepiano, a small town of just over 1,500 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo, at the foot of the Majella mountains. Every year, on the night of June 23rd, on the eve of the patron saint's feast, the community meets in the La Grava area, within the natural site where the ancient village of Rocca once stood.
The celebration has deeply dramatic roots. Between June 20th and 24th, 1765, after three days of incessant rain, a massive landslide caused the entire village, built around the castle of the Orsini princes, to slide down the slope of Montepiano. Churches, fortifications, and houses were swept away, and about 500 of the 2,000 inhabitants lost their lives. Since then, the date of St. John has been indissolubly linked to the memory of that tragedy: the event, established in its current form in 2000, commemorates the anniversary of the catastrophe every year on the site of the vanished ancient village.
Intertwined with historical memory is the ancient peasant tradition of the summer solstice propitiatory fires. In the past, bonfires were lit in farmyards and fields on the shortest night of the year; today, that gesture lives on at La Grava, where fire and water, the ultimate purifying elements, mark the moments of the evening. The celebration thus honors both the religious devotion to St. John the Baptist and the ancient purification rites linked to the land.
The heart of the event is the Palio dei Fuochi: the town's contrade (districts) each prepare their own pile of wood, brushwood, and straw in the La Grava area. After the blessing, the fires are lit, and the winning district receives the Palio banner. It is a challenge that strengthens the identity of the neighborhoods and involves the entire community in a collective ritual of fire and belonging.
The evening is enlivened by songs, dances, and music from the Abruzzo folk tradition. There is no shortage of ancient customs that make this night unique: lu cumberzijune, the frugal meal once eaten while working in the fields; the exchange of ramajetti, the small flower bouquets that friends would give each other to seal their bond; and the ritual of washing hands at the monumental fountain, in memory of the landslide victims. A torchlight procession from the cliffs of Montepiano accompanies participants to the clearing where the fires are lit.
Organized by the Municipality of Roccamontepiano together with the Pro Loco, the event is free to attend and represents one of the most authentic appointments in the Abruzzo summer calendar: a rare blend of historical memory, spirituality, folklore, and a sense of community that attracts residents and visitors to the La Grava area every year.
The 26th edition of the St. John the Baptist Fires was held in Roccamontepiano on June 23, 2026, on the 261st anniversary of the 1765 catastrophe. The solemn outdoor celebration began at 7:00 PM in the La Grava area, with a holy mass in memory of the approximately 500 victims of the landslide.
The evening continued with a torchlight procession from the cliffs of Montepiano to the clearing, followed by the blessing and lighting of the piles prepared by the districts for the Palio dei Fuochi, which culminated in the presentation of the banner to the winning district. Traditional rituals were also featured: the exchange of ramajetti, the lu cumberzijune meal, the hand-washing ritual at the monumental fountain, and songs and dances of Abruzzo folk music.
