The local district festival that has brought San Leonardo in Guardiagrele to life for over sixty years

The San Leonardo and Madonna della Provvidenza Festival is one of the most cherished events in the San Leonardo district of Guardiagrele, one of Italy's most beautiful villages nestled on the eastern slopes of the Majella mountains, in the province of Chieti. For over sixty years, this local festival has brought together district residents and visitors from neighboring towns, united by shared devotion and a sense of community that is renewed every year.
The festival originated as a moment of popular faith in honor of San Leonardo and the Madonna della Provvidenza, the district's protectors. Religious celebrations, including the traditional procession, remain scheduled for the last Sunday of September, following a calendar rooted in the history of the neighborhood. The secular portion, however, has been moved to the summer: an organizational choice by the Valle del Sole Association, chaired by Tonino Di Cocco, designed to avoid the rains of late September and ensure the success of the outdoor evenings.
The secular program spans three consecutive evenings, with entertainment starting at 9:30 PM in the district square. Each night features a different genre, from the greatest hits of Italian and international music to the disco rhythms of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, as well as Latin and pop sounds. Alongside the stage, food stalls offer the delicacies of Abruzzese cuisine, while dedicated areas welcome families and children in a festive, popular atmosphere.
Set in one of the most characteristic villages of Abruzzo, the festival is also an opportunity to discover Guardiagrele, known as the "city of stone" for its Majella stone buildings and its ancient goldsmithing and craft traditions. The San Leonardo district, just outside the historic center, preserves the authentic atmosphere of Abruzzese neighborhood festivals, where religious devotion and popular celebration continue to intertwine.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the San Leonardo and Madonna della Provvidenza Festival have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the secular portion — three evenings of music, food stalls, and entertainment in the San Leonardo district of Guardiagrele — is expected to be held in July, with religious celebrations confirmed for the last Sunday of September. The detailed program will be published by the Valle del Sole Association closer to the event.
Guardiagrele can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro or Pescara-Chieti exits) and the Fondovalle Alento expressway. The reference railway station is Chieti, which is connected by local bus lines. The San Leonardo district is located near the town center.
Admission to all evenings is free. Food stalls with local specialties and children's areas are available. Evenings begin around 9:30 PM.
