The dual patronal feast of the 'painted village' on the Costa dei Trabocchi
The SS. Maria Assunta and San Rocco Patronal Feasts are the most anticipated summer event in Treglio, a tiny municipality in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, overlooking the hills that slope down toward the Costa dei Trabocchi and the Adriatic Sea. Over the course of two days, August 15th and 16th, the town honors its two patrons: the Madonna SS. Assunta, celebrated on Ferragosto, and San Rocco, honored on August 16th. The celebrations are centered in the picturesque Piazza San Giorgio, the civil and religious heart of the village.
Treglio is known as the "painted village" or the village of frescoes: since the nineties, artists and residents have decorated house walls with murals that tell the story of the region—olive and vine cultivation, the coastal trabocchi, and rural traditions. Experiencing the patronal feast means wandering through alleys and squares where every wall is a work of art, in a unique dialogue between popular devotion and contemporary creativity.
The program for the patronal days alternates religious moments—solemn masses and processions with the statues of the saints through the streets—with evening entertainment in the square, featuring live music, a brass band, and the conviviality typical of Abruzzese village festivals. On the eve of the feast, August 14th, the village also hosts a suggestive dawn concert with a shared breakfast along the streets of the Puglianna district, a ritual now deeply loved by locals and visitors alike.
Devotion to San Rocco, protector against epidemics and patron saint of pilgrims, is widespread throughout Abruzzo. In Treglio, a church in the historic center is dedicated to him, just as the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo is named after the Madonna Assunta. This mid-August double anniversary represents the moment when the community, enriched by the return of emigrants and vacationers, reconnects with its roots.
The patronal feasts are organized by the Pro Loco Treglio together with local associations and are part of a rich summer calendar that includes gastronomic festivals, the Treglio Rock Fest, and the historic "Treglio Affrescata" event. The village's location, just minutes from San Vito Chietino, Lanciano, and the beaches of the Costa dei Trabocchi, makes it an ideal destination to combine sea, art, and tradition in the heart of the Abruzzese summer.
The SS. Maria Assunta and San Rocco Patronal Feasts return to Treglio on August 15th and 16th, 2026. The dates are confirmed by the official calendar of the Pro Loco Treglio. As per tradition, Ferragosto is dedicated to the Madonna SS. Assunta and the following day to San Rocco, with religious celebrations and festivities in Piazza San Giorgio. The eve of August 14th features the characteristic dawn concert with breakfast in the village streets. The complete program of events will be released closer to the date.
The celebrations take place in Piazza San Giorgio and the streets of the historic center of Treglio (ZIP 66030), in the province of Chieti.
By car: take the Lanciano exit on the A14 motorway, then follow signs for San Vito Chietino/Treglio. The nearest train station is San Vito-Lanciano on the Adriatic line. Treglio is just a few minutes from the beaches of the Costa dei Trabocchi.
Admission to the celebrations and events in the square is free. For the detailed program: Pro Loco Treglio, tel. +39 328 4222897, e-mail [email protected].
