The student race through the narrow streets of Alatri's historic center
The Spring Race is a running event that transforms the historic center of Alatri into an open-air race course every May. Alatri, one of the most fascinating villages in the province of Frosinone and the Ciociaria region in southern Lazio, is famous for its imposing megalithic Acropolis and cyclopean walls that make it a jewel of Italian archaeology: running through these alleys means crossing centuries of history with every stride.
The event is dedicated to the city's secondary school students and is promoted by the Municipality of Alatri through the Department of Public Education and Youth Policies. It involves local schools—the Alatri 1 Comprehensive Institute, the Alatri 2 "Sacchetti Sassetti" Comprehensive Institute, and the "Egnazio Danti" Institute of Tecchiena—bringing hundreds of young athletes to the streets. The students are divided into several heats and compete along a circuit carved out of the historic center, with the start and finish line set at the entrance to Viale Duca d'Aosta.
Beyond the stopwatch, the Spring Race was born with a strong educational value: it is an opportunity for students to be together, share a sporting experience, and rediscover their city by living it from the ground up, on the run, among the people. Families and citizens line the route to cheer on the students, while the event concludes with a convivial moment and a group photo gathering in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the most beautiful city squares in Alatri.
Though recently established, the Spring Race has quickly become one of the most popular events in the Alatri school and sports calendar. The initiative promotes the values of sport, healthy competition, and outdoor physical activity among the new generations, while simultaneously enhancing the historical and architectural heritage of the municipality. A simple and engaging way to link the city's future—its young people—to its extraordinary past.
The second edition of the Spring Race was held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, with the start set for 10:00 AM in the historic center of Alatri. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Alatri, confirmed the format of the first edition, bringing together the city's secondary school students along a circuit through the village alleys.
Students from the Alatri 1 Comprehensive Institute, the Alatri 2 "Sacchetti Sassetti" Comprehensive Institute, and the "Egnazio Danti" Institute of Tecchiena competed, divided into four heats. The start and finish were at the entrance to Viale Duca d'Aosta, with the event closing in a spirit of celebration and sharing.
Alatri can be reached by car from the A1 Milan-Naples motorway (Frosinone exit) by continuing along the Frosinone-Sora expressway; the historic center is about an hour and a half from Rome. The reference railway station is Frosinone, which is connected to Alatri by bus services.
The race takes place along a circuit in the historic center of Alatri, with the start and finish at the entrance to Viale Duca d'Aosta. During the event, temporary changes to traffic and circulation in the city center are expected.
As this is an event reserved for the city's secondary school students, participation is organized by the schools in collaboration with the Municipality of Alatri. The public is free to follow the race along the route and cheer for the students.
