Europe's largest festival for school choral music, held in Montecatini Terme
The Spring Festival is the most significant European event dedicated to school and youth choral singing. Organized by Feniarco (the Italian National Federation of Regional Choral Associations) in collaboration with the Tuscan Choral Association and in partnership with the European Choral Association, it attracts thousands of young singers from across Italy and abroad to Montecatini Terme, in the heart of Tuscany, every year.
The format is that of a grand choral gathering: participating choirs are divided into study workshops, each led by an Italian or international conductor, where they work for several days on a specific repertoire. The journey culminates in final concerts, where each workshop presents the fruits of their labor to the public. It is an experience that combines high-level musical training, cultural exchange, and the contagious energy of hundreds of young voices.
The festival is divided into two distinct phases, designed for different age groups:
Alongside the festival, the Coro Lab takes place—a training program for conductors, teachers, and musicians, featuring lectures and a study tour that allows participants to observe the workshop process from the inside.
Each edition revolves around a thematic thread that inspires the choice of repertoire and the overall spirit of the event. The musical experiences range across genres, styles, eras, and cultures—from sacred music to singer-songwriter hits, from classical repertoire to world traditions—in a choral narrative that engages both the singers and the audience.
The choice of Montecatini Terme, in the Province of Pistoia, Tuscany, is no coincidence: the famous spa town, strategically located between Lucca and Florence, offers theaters, halls, and accommodation facilities capable of hosting thousands of students and their chaperones. For a few days, the city's squares, theaters, and hotels are filled with music, and the Teatro Verdi becomes the stage for the concluding concerts. It is an event now deeply rooted in the Tuscan cultural calendar, bringing a large, young audience to the city and highlighting its welcoming spirit.
The twenty-first edition of the Spring Festival was held in Montecatini Terme in April 2026, organized in two phases: from April 9 to 11 for primary schools, middle schools, and children's choirs, and from April 15 to 18 for high schools and youth choirs. The theme of the edition was 'Eulogy of Madness'.
Approximately 2,000 choristers from all over Italy and Slovenia worked in study workshops led by Italian and foreign instructors, in a journey that combined training, rehearsals, and meeting moments. The event concluded with final concerts, including the one on April 18 at the Teatro Verdi, where each workshop presented the work they had accomplished.
The 21st edition, themed 'Eulogy of Madness', was divided into two phases plus the Coro Lab training program.
Artistic coordination was entrusted to maestro Carlo Pavese. The workshops were led by Italian and international conductors; among the instructors for the 2026 edition was BaÅŸak DoÄŸan.
Each workshop presented its work in the concluding concerts. The final concert of the first phase was held on Saturday, April 11 at 3 PM (free entry with mandatory booking on Eventbrite), while the second phase closed at the Teatro Verdi on the afternoon of April 18.
Montecatini Terme is easily accessible by train (Montecatini Terme-Monsummano station on the Florence-Lucca-Viareggio line) and by car via the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway, taking the Montecatini Terme exit. The nearest airports are Florence and Pisa.
Participation in the workshops is reserved for school and youth choirs registered through their schools or choral associations. The final concerts at the Teatro Verdi are generally free to attend with mandatory booking (in recent years via Eventbrite, subject to availability).
Montecatini Terme has a wide range of hotels that host participating groups every year; given the high turnout during the festival, early booking is highly recommended.
