Opera returns to the medieval Rocca of Serravalle Pistoiese
Serravalle Opera is the summer appointment with melodrama that the Municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese, in the province of Pistoia, dedicates to the great Italian operatic tradition. The festival chooses the Rocca Nuova, also known as Rocca di Castruccio, as its stage: the powerful medieval fortress that has watched over the village and the Valdinievole from the heights of the Montalbano hills for centuries. Singing opera within these walls means combining history, music, and nature in a single, intense evening.
The Rocca di Castruccio was built starting in 1302, during the wars between Lucca, Florence, and Pistoia, and took its name from the famous warlord Castruccio Castracani. Its thick walls, watchtowers, and projecting polygonal tower provide a natural backdrop for the performances, offering the audience acoustics and an atmosphere difficult to replicate in a traditional theater. It is in this context that Serravalle Opera proposes titles from the operatic repertoire and concerts dedicated to great composers, with particular attention to the figure of Giacomo Puccini, a musical glory of nearby Lucca and all of Tuscany.
The 2026 program focuses on the Puccini Grand Gala, an evening entirely dedicated to the most beloved pages of the Tuscan composer, entrusted to the Accademia Musicale Uzzanese "G. Puccini". A tribute that celebrates the Puccinian legacy in the very land that saw him born and raised, with the arias and symphonic pieces that have made works like La Bohรจme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly immortal.
Serravalle Opera is part of the rich summer cultural calendar of the Rocca, which also hosts the Serravalle Rock and Serravalle Jazz festivals, making the castle a true hub for live music in the province of Pistoia and all of Tuscany. Free admission makes opera accessible to everyone, bringing even those who do not usually attend theaters closer to melodrama. A proposal that enhances the historical-artistic heritage of the village and makes it a point of reference for lovers of great music.
For the 2026 edition, Serravalle Opera celebrates the genius of Giacomo Puccini with a Puccini Grand Gala in the setting of the Rocca di Castruccio. On stage, the Accademia Musicale Uzzanese "G. Puccini" brings the most famous pages of the Tuscan composer back within the medieval walls of the village. An open-air evening that combines the power of opera with the charm of the fortress, with free access for all enthusiasts and curious visitors.
