The chamber music concert of the high-altitude festival in the church of Benabbio, Bagni di Lucca
As part of Musica sulle Apuane, the high-altitude cultural festival that brings the mountains of Tuscany to life every spring and summer, one event has become a true tradition: the chamber music concert in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Benabbio, a hamlet in the municipality of Bagni di Lucca, in the Province of Lucca. Far from the crowded stages of major events, this concert embraces the intimacy of a small village church and the resonant acoustics of its nave to offer a rare and precious listening experience.
Musica sulle Apuane was founded in 2013 with a vision that weaves together music, nature, and the promotion of mountain territories. Organized by the Italian Alpine Club (C.A.I.), "Elso Biagi" section of Massa, in collaboration with other Tuscan C.A.I. sections and the Apuan Alps Regional Park, the festival offers a series of events every year that wind through mountain huts, churches, botanical gardens, museums, and trails of the Apuan Alps. The artistic direction is entrusted to pianist Gioia Giusti. All events are free of charge, in the spirit of making culture accessible to those who venture into the mountains.
Benabbio is a small hamlet in the territory of Bagni di Lucca, a spa town famous since the 19th century for its waters and illustrious guests. The village retains an ancient charm, with its stone houses, parish church, and a small museum that tells the history and traditions of the community. The concert is almost always preceded in the afternoon by a guided tour of the Benabbio museum, making the day a journey into the local heritage.
Over the years, the church of Benabbio has hosted top-tier chamber ensembles: string quartets formed by principal players from prestigious orchestras, ensembles selected through competitions and scholarships, and repertoires ranging from classical to contemporary. It is an opportunity to hear great chamber music in an intimate and evocative setting, where every note finds its place among the village stones. The event is part of a program that, year after year, spans the municipalities of Massa, Carrara, Stazzema, Seravezza, Camaiore, Molazzana, Fivizzano, and, of course, Bagni di Lucca.
The 14th edition of Musica sulle Apuane, scheduled from April 25 to mid-September 2026 with fourteen free music and theater events, dedicates its Bagni di Lucca stop to the traditional concert in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Benabbio. The 2026 edition celebrates the 80th anniversary of women's suffrage in Italy, with the "Sirena di Aronte" as a symbol, and provides opportunities for young female artists through dedicated scholarships. The festival is organized by the C.A.I. of Massa and the Apuan Alps Regional Park, under the artistic direction of Gioia Giusti.
The concert features a chamber ensemble selected by the Lunigiana International Music Festival, winner of a scholarship offered by the festival and awarded with this performance (the first appointment of the selection was held in Fivizzano on July 17). The program includes music by female composers of the past and present, in line with the theme of the edition dedicated to women's suffrage. The event is the result of a collaboration between the "Felice Palma" Music High School of Massa, the Lunigiana International Music Festival, and the Michel de Montaigne Foundation.
