About Monteverde Spring Festival

The Spring Festival transforms Largo Federico Caffè in Monteverde into a vibrant open-air urban oasis dedicated to live music and shared creativity. Curated by I Concerti nel Parco, the event brings together a full weekend of free instrument lessons, theatre and folk dance workshops, visual arts sessions, and evening concerts featuring emerging Roman bands. Everything is free of charge and designed to bring families, children, and local youth together in a square that serves as a true community hub.

A square that becomes a stage

The Spring Festival was born from a simple, generous idea: to take live music out of concert halls and return it to the streets, right in a local neighborhood square. The chosen venue is Largo Federico Caffè, in the Monteverde district, within Rome's Municipio XII, in the Lazio region. This public space, named in 2008 after the economist Federico Caffè, a professor at Sapienza University, has since become one of the area's most lively meeting points, frequented daily by families, students, and residents.

Who organizes it

The event is curated by I Concerti nel Parco, a historic Roman association that has been producing one of the capital's longest-running summer festivals since the 1990s, previously hosted at Villa Doria Pamphilj and the Casa del Jazz. The Spring Festival represents its most urban and community-focused branch: not a grand stage, but a widespread, free initiative built together with the neighborhood.

The format: no stage, the audience inside the music

The most distinctive directorial choice is the absence of a traditional stage. Musicians perform in the center of the square, surrounded by spectators seated around them in an informal, conversational atmosphere. The audience doesn't just listen: they can pick up an instrument, try a chord, and effectively become part of the performance. It is a way to break down the distance between performer and listener, making music an experience to be lived rather than just watched.

Free workshops and lessons

Alongside the concerts, the program offers a wide range of completely free educational activities, open to children, teenagers, and adults with no prior experience required:

  • Instrument lessons — guitar, singing, and keyboards, with short group sessions held over both days.
  • Theatre workshop — in the 2025 edition, dedicated to a poetic duel between Trilussa and Belli, the two great Roman dialect poets.
  • Folk dance workshop — pizzica and tarantella, with an introduction to basic steps and a final group dance.
  • Visual arts atelier — wood engraving and woodcut printing, with practical demonstrations and printing sessions.

Evening concerts

The evenings are headlined by young bands performing in a tight, fast-paced lineup that spans singer-songwriter tracks, contemporary pop, and jazz and soul influences. The 2025 edition featured Davide Shorty as the main guest, one of the most recognizable singer-songwriters and performers of the new Italian scene, with Chiara Cami hosting both evenings.

Why it's worth visiting

The Spring Festival is not a tourist event, and that is precisely what makes it interesting: it is one of the most authentic ways to see how Rome lives in its residential neighborhoods. Monteverde, perched on the Janiculum Hill between Villa Doria Pamphilj and upper Trastevere, is a pedestrian-friendly piece of the city, filled with Art Nouveau villas, gardens, and historic shops. Spending an afternoon in the square between a guitar lesson and a pizzica workshop, then staying for the evening concert, is an immersion into the community spirit that is the true hallmark of the neighborhood.

Admission and accessibility

All activities — concerts, workshops, and lessons — are free of charge. For some evenings, the organizers provide online booking via TicketOne, which is useful for securing a seat when attendance is high. As it is an open-air event in a public square, participation is also open to those arriving without a reservation, subject to space availability.
