Eventi a Fontana is the summer festival that transforms the Giardini dell'Acqua Paola on the Gianicolo hill into an open-air stage. Located in the Municipality of Rome, within the historic city center, this venue sits just above Trastevere, where the monumental Mostra dell'Acqua Paola—the Fontanone commissioned by Pope Paul V in the early 17th century—offers one of Italy's most famous views. While the green space behind the fountain is typically closed to the public, it reopens every afternoon during the festival, allowing visitors to access the inner garden for a few special weeks.

A festival born from the neighborhood

The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Rome I (Historic Center) and curated by the Il Posto delle Fragole Cultural Association, under the artistic direction of Gabriele Manili. The concept is simple yet effective: to return a symbolic landmark to the Romans, not just as a viewpoint for photos, but as a vibrant meeting space. Over the years, the format has solidified, reaching its fourth edition in 2025, split into two windows—July and September—to frame the beginning and the end of the Roman summer.

What to see and hear

The program changes nightly, spanning diverse genres without hierarchy: theatrical monologues, author-led reading concerts, book presentations, art and botanical lectures, and dance evenings. Alongside the evening events, the festival features several weekly staples that have become its signature:

• Monday — Theatre workshop led by Gabriele Manili: interactive lessons to explore the stage, each session standing on its own.
• Tuesday — Consigliansi Libri (Book Recommendations): open readings where anyone can take the stage to share their favorite book.
• Wednesday — Kundalini yoga session at sunset.
• Thursday — Book Crossing: book swapping with a view over the rooftops of Rome.

The atmosphere

This is not a mass-market festival, and it doesn't aim to be. The audience sits in a few rows of chairs, the sun sets behind St. Peter's, and the city noise is muffled from below: the vibe is that of an open-air living room, where the connection between the stage and the audience remains intimate. While the program speaks primarily to local residents, curious travelers can easily stumble upon it, as the Gianicolo is already a must-visit stop on any Roman itinerary.

Tradition and local context

The Gianicolo is no ordinary hill: it is Rome's natural balcony, deeply tied to the Risorgimento memory of the 1849 Roman Republic and still marked today by the daily noon cannon shot. Hosting a free festival here means weaving together monumental heritage and daily cultural life, following the very Roman tradition of using historic squares and gardens as social spaces. All shows are free to attend, though reservations are recommended due to limited capacity.

When to go

Recent editions have been held between July and September. September, in particular, is the best time: the evenings are cooler, the sunset light is softer, and the city is less crowded than in the peak of August. It is best to arrive early, both to secure a seat and to enjoy the garden and the view before the show begins.
