The grain festival in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, the village of Burgio, in the province of Agrigento, preserves one of the most cherished traditions of its summer calendar: the Spiga Festival. The event celebrates the grain harvest and the fertility of the land, elements that have always been fundamental to the life and economy of this corner of inland Sicily. It is a festival that weaves together faith, culture, and peasant tradition, offering visitors an authentic sense of the bond between the community and its fields.
The program spans two days, alternating between religious moments and popular festivities. The spiritual heart of the festival lies in the processions and rituals linked to the blessing of the harvest, where the ear of wheat becomes a symbol of gratitude and good fortune for the land. Alongside the sacred dimension, the streets and squares of the historic center come alive with folk performances and live music, echoing the songs and dances of Sicilian tradition.
The culinary aspect is not to be missed, with food stalls dedicated to typical Sicilian dishes and local products: a perfect opportunity to sample the region's specialties, from rustic peasant cuisine to the flavors of the Sicani Mountains. Along the festival route, there are also markets featuring artisanal and agricultural products, showcasing local craftsmanship in a village already famous for its ancient tradition of ceramics and bronze bells.
Experiencing the Spiga Festival also means discovering Burgio: its medieval village, the Peralta Castle, the Mother Church of Norman origin, and the numerous white stone portals that make it the "city of a hundred portals." Located within the Sicani Mountains Park, Burgio offers visitors an unspoiled landscape and a wealth of traditions that the festival helps to pass down from year to year.
