About Spicanardo Festival

Every July 2nd, the Scorpeto district and the Via San Rocco area in Piedimonte Matese awaken, enveloped in the pungent scent of spicanardo, the wild lavender that grows on the slopes of the Matese mountains. The Spicanardo Festival blends the Marian devotion of the Visitation with the valley's rural culture: celebrations in the 15th-century church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, bundles of lavender brought for blessing, local products, and Neapolitan folk music, all organized by the Pro Loco Vallata.

A festival scented with wild lavender

There is one day in Piedimonte Matese when the air in the historic center changes its scent. It is July 2nd, when the Scorpeto district and the Via San Rocco area fill with bundles of spicanardo โ€” Lavandula spica, the wild lavender that reaches full bloom on the slopes of the Matese massif during these days. Gathered along the trails and brought into town, it is blessed in front of the church and then taken home, where for generations it has scented linen closets and kept moths away.

Scorpeto and the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli

The heart of the festival is Scorpeto, the high ground overlooking the oldest neighborhoods of the city, in the province of Caserta, Campania. Here stands the small 15th-century church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, the destination of a walk that the locals repeat every year. Its privileged position offers a view that embraces the entire valley: for many, the day begins at dawn with breakfast enjoyed in front of the panorama, before the July sun becomes too intense.

From the Visitation of Mary to rural ritual

The roots of the event lie in the liturgical calendar: the Catholic Church used to celebrate the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth on July 2nd, the meeting recounted in the Gospel of Luke where the Virgin sings the Magnificat. The reform following the Second Vatican Council moved the official memorial to May 31st, but in Piedimonte Matese, the popular tradition has not yielded: the community continues to gather at Scorpeto on the ancient date. Around this Marian devotion, the rural custom of blessing the spicanardo has been cemented, a sign of the symbiosis between the valley families and the mountain that towers over them.

The commitment of Pro Loco Vallata

Since the early 1990s, the Pro Loco Vallata, in collaboration with the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore, has taken charge of the event and transformed it: what risked remaining a niche devotion has become a city-wide attraction, combining solemn rites with a moment of sociality featuring typical Matese products and Neapolitan folk music. The same association organizes other key events in the Piedimonte calendar, from the New Year's Concert to the living nativity scene, and the Corpus Domini Flower Festival.

How to experience the day

  • The climb to Scorpeto from the early hours, with breakfast outdoors and the view over the valley
  • The masses held throughout the day in the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli
  • The blessing of the spicanardo bundles, which families then take home
  • The short procession along the village streets at the end of the evening celebration
  • The local product stands and the social gathering hosted by the Pro Loco
  • The Neapolitan music concert that closes the day

Piedimonte Matese, gateway to the Matese

With its medieval alleys, convents, and the Torano stream descending from the mountain, Piedimonte Matese is the main gateway to the Matese National Park, between the Alto Casertano area and the Molise border. The Spicanardo Festival is one of the most authentic ways to discover it: no big stages or tourist crowds, just a community repeating a simple gesture โ€” gathering wild lavender and bringing it to be blessed โ€” for at least three decades of organized editions, and much longer in oral memory.

Spicanardo Festival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Spicanardo Festival took place on Thursday, July 2, in the Scorpeto district and along Via San Rocco, in Piedimonte Matese. As every year, the community climbed to the 15th-century church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli for the memorial of the Visitation of Mary, with the blessing of the wild Matese lavender bundles and a social gathering organized by the Pro Loco Vallata featuring local products and folk music.

July 2, 2026, at Scorpeto

In 2026, Piedimonte Matese once again renewed its appointment with the spicanardo. The day opened early in the morning with the climb to Scorpeto, the high ground overlooking the city's oldest districts, and with celebrations in the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, where the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore led the liturgical memorial of the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth.

Throughout the day, the faithful climbed to the church for prayer, bringing with them bundles of Lavandula spica gathered on the slopes of the Matese. Surrounding the rites, the Pro Loco Vallata confirmed the formula that has expanded the festival to the whole city over the years: local products, sociality, and Neapolitan folk music after the mass.
