A month of performances, concerts, and traditions in the village of Sperlinga
Sperlinga Summer is the annual festival that lights up the village of Sperlinga throughout August. As one of the smallest and most charming municipalities in the province of Enna, in the heart of inland Sicily, it offers a unique setting. Promoted by the Municipality of Sperlinga, the event features dozens of appointments including theater, music, cabaret, cultural initiatives, and folk traditions, using the ancient stones of the castle and the alleys of the historic center as a natural backdrop.
Sperlinga is famous for its Rock Castle, a fortress partially carved into the rock, featuring a system of caves inhabited since ancient times. It is this extraordinary context, along with village squares like Piazza Marconi and Piazza Castello, that makes the festival's atmosphere unique: performances take place under the stars in places steeped in history and memory, in a constant dialogue between heritage and contemporaneity.
The program alternates between different genres and styles: the open-air classical theater of the Teatri di Pietra festival hosted in the Sub-Urban Park, pop and singer-songwriter concerts in Piazza Marconi, evenings of cabaret and comedy in the Sicilian dialect, and widespread cultural events such as Isola di Inchiostro and readings in the Castle Church. In recent editions, the village has also welcomed nationally renowned artists, confirming the festival's popular yet high-quality vocation.
The beating heart of the Sperlinga summer is the Tortone Festival, dedicated to the typical local pastry that is fried and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. It is accompanied by the Historical Pageant of the Castellana and the election of the Lady of the Castles of Sicily. Costumed figures, flag-wavers, musicians, falconers, and masters-at-arms parade through the village streets, re-enacting the siege of the castle in 1283, while artisan workshops and tastings complete a day of celebration deeply felt by the community.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by an international Artist Residency hosted within the castle grounds. It brings artists from various countries to Sperlinga to create live works among the millenary caves and walls, which are then destined for a civic collection. This project combines contemporary art, hospitality, and territorial enhancement, expanding the horizons of an event deeply rooted in its village.
With largely free admission and a calendar covering almost the entire month of August, Sperlinga Summer represents one of the most vibrant cultural offerings among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy in inland Sicily, capable of attracting visitors and restoring centrality to a small town in the province of Enna.
The 2026 edition of Sperlinga Summer is confirmed with the third Artist Residency at the Castle of Sperlinga, titled "F2F - Face to Face", scheduled from August 17 to 25, 2026. The project, promoted by the Municipality of Sperlinga with the "Giovanni Forti Natoli" Cultural Association and the patronage of the Sicilian Region, brings artists from Argentina, Georgia, Germany, Finland, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Hungary, and Italy to the village, who will create works live among the cave system and the castle halls.
Alongside the residency, guided tours linked to local memory and traditions are announced, as well as a theatrical performance in the ancient Sperlinga Gallo-Italic dialect and a Sicilian folk music show by maestro Filippo Paternò di Gangi. The general program of the festival, including concerts in Piazza Marconi and the traditional Tortone Festival, will be announced by the Municipality of Sperlinga in the weeks preceding the event.
The remaining program of concerts, theater, and the Tortone Festival is being published.
Sperlinga is located in central Sicily, in the province of Enna, on the border with the Madonie mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS117, connected to the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway exits. The nearest airports are Catania and Palermo. The reference railway station is Nicosia/Enna area, with onward travel by bus.
Most of the festival events have free admission; for the Tortone Festival, tastings may have a separate cost.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking through the village alleys and a light jacket for the evenings, given the altitude of approximately 750 meters. For the updated program, please refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Sperlinga.
