About Spampanati

The Spampanati Festival is one of Messina's most cherished Easter traditions. On Easter morning, the statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna della Mercede are carried in procession from the Church of Santa Maria della Mercede in San Valentino, on Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, winding through the city center toward the most anticipated moment: the moving encounter between Mother and Son in Piazza Duomo. Organized by the Confraternita Maria Santissima della Mercede, the festival marks the transition from the mourning of Good Friday to the joy of the Resurrection, amidst a jubilant chorus of bells, brass bands, and cheering crowds.

The ritual that concludes Holy Week in Messina

The Spampanati Festival is the event that, every Easter morning, releases the emotional tension of Holy Week in the heart of Messina, the Sicilian capital overlooking the Strait. The procession stages the joyful meeting between the Madonna and her Risen Son, turning the city center into a stage for faith and popular participation. It is one of the most deeply felt traditions in the city and across Sicily, blending historical memory, religious sentiment, and community identity.

The origin of the name

The unique name "Spampanati" is rooted in an ancient local custom: the women of the district, having set aside the somber tones of winter and the Passion, would wear brightly colored, floral silk dresses for the occasion. The festival took its name from those vivid, "spampanati" (blooming/flamboyant) costumes, symbolically celebrating the return of spring, rebirth, and hope following the solemnity of Good Friday.

The procession and the statues

The parade departs from the Church of Santa Maria della Mercede in San Valentino, on Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, following the solemn Holy Mass. The two statues, the Risen Christ and the Madonna della Mercede, are carried along the traditional route through the historic center, accompanied by the ringing of bells and live brass band music. The route includes Via Centonze, Via Nino Bixio, Via Cesare Battisti, Corso Cavour, and finally Piazza Duomo.

The encounter in Piazza Duomo

The most anticipated and moving moment is the encounter in Piazza Duomo: amidst the crowd, to the sound of bells and the playing of bands, the two statues draw near, and the Madonna opens her arms to her Risen Son. According to tradition, flocks of sparrows were once released from the Virgin's mantle, a symbol of liberation and reconciliation among the faithful. It is the figurative embrace that restores the joy of the Resurrection to the community.

Between the sacred and the profane

  • Devotion: the festival has been managed for centuries by the Confraternita Maria Santissima della Mercede, the guardian of the rite.
  • Music: the procession is accompanied by local bands that mark the highlights of the parade.
  • Popular tradition: historically, after the religious services, stalls would offer calia (toasted chickpeas), sweets, and the giaurrina longa, while the afternoon featured a maypole climb.

For visitors, the Spampanati is the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Messina: a city that, on Easter Day, fills its squares with faith, color, and Mediterranean warmth.
