About Feast of Saint Paulinus

Every year in mid-August, the coastal village of Mili Marina—a district of Messina overlooking the Strait—gathers to honor its patron, Saint Paulinus the Bishop. For several days, the novena, solemn masses, and the procession of the statue along the ancient Roman road blend with evenings of music, children's games, food tastings, and a grand fireworks display over the sea. It is the defining festival of a fishing community, simple and heartfelt, renewing a bond that began in 1957.

The Patronal Feast of Mili Marina

In Mili Marina, a small seaside district of the Municipality of Messina stretching along the Via Nazionale (the ancient Via Consolare Valeria) on the shores of the Strait, the feast of Saint Paulinus the Bishop is the most anticipated event of the summer. For a few days, usually around the third Sunday of August, the fishing village comes alive with religious celebrations and popular festivities that involve the entire community.

A devotion born from the sea

Devotion to Saint Paulinus has roots going back centuries: a first church dedicated to him was built in the 17th century, while the current parish church dates back to 1956. However, the heart of the tradition is August 24, 1957, the day the statue of the saint—a gift from the Settineri family and the work of sculptor Giuseppe Stuflesser from Bolzano—arrived in Mili Marina by sea, welcomed by a evocative boat procession. Since then, every year the community renews that memory with the procession of the statue along the village streets, accompanied by a large group of bearers.

Faith and popular celebration

The religious program, organized by the Parishes of Mili Marina and Mili San Marco, marks the days with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the novena of Saint Paulinus, solemn vespers with the blessing of the bearers, and Eucharistic celebrations. On Sunday, the highlight day, morning and afternoon masses precede the procession of the saint through the village streets.

Alongside the dimension of faith, there is the convivial aspect: the evenings offer musical and variety shows, karaoke, games for children, and tastings of local gastronomic products, with stands set up along the village streets. Closing the festival late in the evening are the traditional fireworks that light up the sky over the Strait.

An identity-defining event

More than just a major event, the feast of Saint Paulinus is the moment when Mili Marina rediscovers its identity: a community of ancient fishing families that, through processions, music, and gastronomy, finds its Christian and maritime roots. For those visiting the province of Messina and Sicily in August, it is an opportunity to experience an authentic patronal feast, far from the major tourist circuits.
