The lake procession on a felucca and the White Night in the Strait's seaside village

In Ganzirri, an ancient fishing village overlooking the characteristic brackish lakes at the northeastern tip of Messina, the Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is the very identity of the community. Every year, in the heart of summer, the village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that unites faith, historical memory, and maritime culture, set in a unique landscape between the sea of the Strait and the tranquil waters of Lake Ganzirri.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the lake procession. Following the solemn Eucharistic celebration, the statue of Saint Nicholas leaves the church and is carried on shoulders along the narrow streets surrounding the lake. Once at the shore, the Saint is placed on a felucca—the traditional boat once used for swordfish fishing—and taken in procession across the water. A fleet of small boats follows the cortege devoutly, while fireworks are set off as it passes the houses as a sign of gratitude to the patron. The evening concludes with a pyrotechnic display launched from a platform on the lake.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival days bring the entire village to life. The Saint Nicholas White Night transforms the historic center of the seaside village with live music, street bands, games, sports, cultural activities, art and photography exhibitions, DJ sets, street food, and crafts. There are also musical performances in Piazza Cutugno and moments dedicated to sports and families in the parish field.
The festival is also a gastronomic occasion: the star is swordfish, a symbol of the fishing tradition of the Strait of Messina, celebrated in a true festival. Other Sicilian street food specialties are also available, from pane cunzato to traditional desserts.
The cult of Saint Nicholas in Ganzirri has ancient and deep roots, tied to the life of a village that has always lived off the sea and its lakes. The parish preserves relics of the Saint, and the festival represents the moment when the community renews its bond with its patron. The event is part of the rich calendar of patronal feasts in the province of Messina and Sicily, standing out for its scenic aquatic procession, a rarity in the island's religious celebrations.
At the moment, the Saint Nicholas of Bari Parish in Ganzirri has not yet published the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition. The festival, deeply rooted in the life of the seaside village, is held every year around the second Sunday of August and culminates in the evocative lake procession on a felucca, escorted by the boats of the faithful and accompanied by fireworks.
The usual schedule of liturgical celebrations is expected, along with the White Night featuring music, street food, and cultural activities in the historic center, and the swordfish festival. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers; this page will be updated as soon as official dates and details are available.
