The patronal feast of the hillside village of Faro Superiore, in Messina

The Feast of S. Maria Assunta is the patronal celebration of Faro Superiore, an ancient hillside village overlooking the Strait and part of the Municipality of Messina, in Sicily. For residents and the many 'farioti' who return to the village each year, it is the most anticipated moment of the summer: a full week of secular and religious events culminating on the Sunday dedicated to the Madonna Assunta, the community's patron saint.
The devotion is rooted in an episode passed down through local tradition for centuries. It is said that on the night of 1536, the Madonna appeared to a sentry on guard, while the church bells rang miraculously on their own, waking the villageโthen known as Casale del Faroโand alerting it to a pirate raid. That protection gave rise to the cult that still animates the festival today, giving the recurrence a meaning that goes beyond pure religiosity: it is the foundational memory of an entire community.
The secular festivities enliven the Campetto Parrocchiale and Piazza della Chiesa for several days, with a program that alternates genres and generations:
The heart of the festival is the day dedicated to the patron saint. After the morning masses, marked by traditional mortar fire, the statue of the Assunta is carried in a solemn procession on a float through the village streets in the late afternoon, accompanied by the faithful and the bands. The evening concludes late at night with a fireworks display, reflecting in the waters of the Strait of Messina, marking the end of the festivities.
Organized by the S. Maria Assunta Festival Committee together with the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta, the event is entirely free of charge and represents one of the most heartfelt moments in the calendar of patronal feasts in the Messina districts. Between the stalls, artisanal gelato, and music in the square, Faro Superiore shows the authentic face of the Sicilian villages, where the patron saint's feast remains the glue of an entire community.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of S. Maria Assunta in Faro Superiore have not yet been officially announced. The patronal feast is traditionally held in the last week of August, with a series of secular evenings in the square (music, bands, theatre, cabaret) and the solemn day dedicated to the patron saint, with the procession of the Assunta's float and the final fireworks display.
The complete program will be published by the S. Maria Assunta Festival Committee and the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta in the weeks preceding the event. This page will be updated as soon as official 2026 information becomes available.
Events are held in Faro Superiore, a hillside district north of Messina, primarily in Piazza della Chiesa and the Campetto Parrocchiale, surrounding the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Faro Superiore can be reached by car from the city of Messina by following signs for the northern districts (Faro/Torre Faro area). By train or ship, you arrive at Messina Centrale, from where you can continue by public transport or car towards the hills.
All events are free of charge. For information and an updated program, you can contact the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta (tel. +39 090 388481, email [email protected]).
