The festival celebrating the Maremma tortello in the tufa village of Sorano
In the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, perched on a tufa spur overlooking the Lente River, the village of Sorano (Province of Grosseto) preserves one of the area's most beloved gastronomic traditions. The Sorano Tortello Festival is the annual event that, between late May and early June, transforms the historic center into a grand gathering dedicated to the dish that best tells the story of this community's identity.
The absolute star is the Sorano tortello, a local variation of the famous Maremma tortello. It is a fresh, hand-rolled egg pasta filled with fresh ricotta and spinach (or chard), scented with a pinch of nutmeg. Tradition calls for it to be served with a robust Maremma meat ragรน, or, in the simpler version, with butter and sage. It is a peasant dish, humble in its ingredients but incredibly rich in flavor, served in large quantities at the stalls set up for the occasion.
The beating heart of the event is the kitchen. Throughout the festival, the food stalls in Piazza Busatti offer a menu rich in local specialties, from homemade tortelli to grilled meats, accompanied by local wines. Opening hours follow the rhythm of the Maremma table:
Beyond the excellent food, the Sorano Tortello Festival offers an entertainment program designed for all ages. Evenings are enlivened by musical performances and dance parties, which animate the square until late at night. An artisan market is also set up in Piazza Busatti, where you can browse through local products and handmade creations. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic atmosphere of a village that has managed to preserve its medieval charm intact.
The festival is also an excellent excuse to visit one of the most fascinating places in the Maremma. Along with Pitigliano and Sovana, Sorano is part of the Cittร del Tufo (Tufa Cities) territory, famous for its evocative Etruscan Vie Cave carved into the rock, the Orsini Fortress, and the Masso Leopoldino. Participating in the festival means combining the pleasure of good food with the discovery of a unique historical and landscape heritage in Tuscany.
