Float parades, costumes, and music in the heart of Solofra, Irpinia
Every year, in the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday, Solofra—a town in the province of Avellino, in Campania—transforms into a massive open-air stage. The Solofra Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco Solofra Tourist Association with the patronage of the local government and has grown over the years to become one of the most awaited events in all of Irpinia, drawing visitors from across the region.
The formula is that of a quintessential popular festival: masks, confetti, allegorical floats, dancing, and music along the streets of the center, with Piazza San Michele serving as the natural focal point of the event. The organizers' stated goal is to involve the entire community in an atmosphere of joy and sharing, blending local carnival traditions with spectacular new additions each year.
The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats, crafted by local groups and artisans. These large-scale structures, often inspired by cinema and cartoon characters, are unveiled to the public before parading through the town. Accompanying the floats is the classic carnival ensemble:
Among the historic floats is the one titled «Città di Solofra», presented at the start of the festivities and created by local associations; its unveiling is traditionally the first event on the Solofra calendar.
The highlight is the Great Float Parade, typically held in the late afternoon. The floats gather to create an evening procession that travels through the center of Solofra alongside masked groups and bands. This is when the celebration reaches its peak participation, with families and curious onlookers lining the entire route.
Recent editions have also offered spectacular attractions: in 2025, for instance, a giant four-meter-tall animated structure depicting the Transformer Bumblebee was presented in collaboration with the Mr. Orfei circus.
The Solofra Carnival is not an isolated event; it is part of the widespread Irpinia Carnival calendar, which links dozens of festivals across the province of Avellino during the same period. In just a few days, one can move from the floats of Solofra to the tarantella of Montemarano, from the zeze of Mercogliano, Cesinali, and Capriglia Irpina to the traditional masquerades of Serino, and on to the Historic Carnival of Castelvetere and the parades of Paternopoli, Baiano, and Savignano Irpino.
For those visiting inland Campania in winter, this tapestry of rituals, songs, and masks represents one of the most authentic ways to experience Irpinian folk traditions, which differ greatly from the urban and tourist-focused carnivals of major cities.
Dates change annually as they follow the movable carnival calendar. The 2025 edition was spread over three days—Saturday, February 22, Sunday, February 23, and Friday, February 28—while in 2026, the Great Float Parade was scheduled for Friday, February 13, at 6:00 PM, in the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday on February 17.
The Solofra Carnival is a free, open-air event, perfect for a family day out. Children will find masks, confetti, and floats to photograph, while adults have the chance to discover an Irpinian town off the beaten tourist path. It is also an excellent starting point for a weekend exploring the villages of the Avellino province, with their taverns, local products, and hilly landscapes.
For 2026, the Solofra Carnival reached its peak on Friday, February 13, at 6:00 PM, with the Great Float Parade in the city center streets. The event was included in the official 2026 Irpinia Carnival calendar promoted across the province of Avellino, alongside festivities in Montemarano, Mercogliano, Serino, Castelvetere, Baiano, Cesinali, and Paternopoli.
As per tradition, the gathering brought together the allegorical floats created by local groups, accompanied by masked troupes, bands, and entertainment along the route, with free admission for the public. The Solofra date opened the key week of the Irpinian Carnival, which concluded on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
The 2026 Irpinia Carnival calendar, released in early February, indicated this as the reference event for the Solofra edition. Any collateral initiatives (presentation of the «Città di Solofra» float, dance school performances, awards) were communicated locally by the Pro Loco.
The event unfolds along the streets of the center of Solofra (AV), with Piazza San Michele, the town's civil and religious heart, as the main reference point.
Solofra is easily reached by car via the main route between Avellino and Salerno. On parade days, it is advisable to arrive well in advance and park in areas outside the center, then continue on foot.
Free admission to all scheduled events.
