About San Lorenzo Maiorano

Every February 7th, Manfredonia celebrates its patron saint, San Lorenzo Maiorano, a 6th-century Bishop of Siponto linked to the origins of the cult of Saint Michael on the Gargano. The solemnity blends religious devotion—including a novena, a stational Mass in the Cathedral, and a solemn procession of the saint's relic and statue through the historic center—with an evening civic celebration in Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, featuring live music, tastings of Apulian specialties, and a fireworks display on the Castello beach.

The patronal feast of Manfredonia

The Solemnity of San Lorenzo Maiorano is the most cherished annual event for the town of Manfredonia, in the province of Foggia (Apulia). Every year on February 7th, the city pays homage to its patron saint and protector of the entire Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, in a day that weaves religious devotion with popular civic festivities.

Who was San Lorenzo Maiorano

San Lorenzo Maiorano was the Bishop of Siponto, the ancient city that preceded modern-day Manfredonia, living between the 5th and 6th centuries. Tradition links him closely to the origins of the cult of Saint Michael the Archangel on the Gargano: according to hagiographic accounts, it was Bishop Lorenzo who received the apparitions of the Archangel that led to the discovery of the sacred grotto at Monte Sant'Angelo, now the Sanctuary of Saint Michael. His figure is deeply rooted in the spiritual identity of the Sipontine territory, and his memory is celebrated on February 7th, the anniversary of his death.

Religious celebrations

The heart of the solemnity is liturgical. In the nine days leading up to the feast, a preparatory novena takes place, featuring Eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer dedicated to the saintly bishop. The eve of the feast marks the opening of the Solemn First Vespers, presided over by the Archbishop alongside the Canons of the Cathedral Chapter.

On the day of the feast, the Basilica Cathedral of San Lorenzo Maiorano hosts a series of morning Eucharistic celebrations, culminating in the stational Mass presided over by the Archbishop with the Sipontine Chapter and the city clergy. At noon, the solemn procession begins: the relic and the statue of the saint are carried through the streets of the historic center, a gesture that unites generations and neighborhoods, involving the entire community.

Civic celebrations

The religious dimension is complemented by civic festivities. In the evening, Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII becomes the city's gathering place: live music, a culinary trail with tastings of traditional Apulian specialties offered by local businesses, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over Manfredonia from the evocative setting of the Castello beach.

A symbol of identity

Between solemn liturgy, the town band, local flavors, and fireworks, the Solemnity of San Lorenzo Maiorano represents much more than a patronal feast: it is a moment of collective identity where Manfredonia rediscovers its Sipontine roots and its ancient bond with the Gargano and the Michaelic cult.
